Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

My name is Dids, I am following the site for almost 2 months now and I can honestly say this group has a lot of genuine love, wisdom and care. I was recently dx with AML last Nov. 20, 2012 M4 with trisomy 14 abnormality which makes me in the intermediate category. I was dx after 6-8 wks complains of sore throat, enlarge tonsils and fatigue and 3 wks of abnormal CBC studies which was WBC 1.7 Hemoglobin 9.8 and platelet 77 and ANC of 0 (Nov. 19, 2012) and confirm bone marrow biopsy the following day with 20% blasts.
Tx plan: Nov. 20, 2012 induction, BMB Dec. 4-in remission and d/c from hospital Dec. 14, 2012 (no major issues during the hosp stay except for 2 episodes of fever and mouth sores). Repeat BMB Dec. 31,2012- still possible with 7% blasts
Jan. 2, 2013 consolidation chemo (my ONC thinks that is is enough to get me in full remission) with 7 days stay at the hosp. I was rehosp last Jan 17, 2012 due to febrile neutropenia and d/c Jan 22, 2012 with my CBC trending towards up.
Jan 30, 2013 meeting with ONC and transplant M.D. Big day for decision making chemo only vs transplant and if I am in full remission.
I am in great spirits with excellent family support system and I am ready to conquer AML.

I did finish a round of consolidation last March 2013 hoping to have a transplant around last week of April 2013 ( I have a platelet of 78 during admission). The transplant did not materialize due to my sister who is my only match is not available due to pregnancy issues. I was also re hospitalized a week after the consolidation round for 2 weeks due to neutropenic fevers although the blood cultures were negative. I did run high temp for 2 weeks. Currently my treatment is done, praying that I will not relapse. Let me summarize a few points with my case.
1. My blood counts are all normal except my platelets. They are consistently hovering from 65-78.
2. Treatment is done due to my last round of chemo I had severe neutropenia with WBC 0.2 for 3 weeks and low platelets ( and they say chemo has cummulative effect, so that means if I have to do another round of high dose cytarabine my neutropenia will be longer and the platelets will be lower)
3. I went back to work June 10, 2013 full-time without any restrictions. I am a physical therapist by profession. I feel good.
4. I am back playing competitive tennis, although doubles.
5. I continue to pray each and everyone on this site for strength, love, healing and peace.

Thanks for posting and giving us your update. It sounds like things are certainly going in the right direction for you. I am so happy you could actually return to work, as it is something I want desperately, but I am getting chemo still though I am post transplant. With flt3, I am on sorafenib (inhibitor) and now getting a few rounds of Decitabine, so my counts are usually pathetic, though they were wonderful today.
I enjoy reading the triumphs. This group has been instrumental in my mental health. I am blessed to have so many here that share everything. Be well and please stay in touch!
