Wow. That sounds so horribly insulting. I am really sorry you had to go through that. It is NOT fair for people, especially in the medical profession, to assume all young girls are sexually active just because it's what's "in" right now.

I've been having yearly visits with a gynacologist since I was 19 because I had really bad cramps. The last time I went, she asked me that too. When I told her no, she gave me a kind of sympathetic look and made a little joke about needing to introduce me to people. The way she said it was not really insulting, but it did made me think. They must see all sorts of cases. But are virgins really that rare? I don't want to believe that. That makes me incredibly sad. Does that mean my doctor thinks I SHOULD be sexually active? At 19, 20, 21, and now, I still feel like I'm too young. Why am I expected to be sexually active? That is incredibly insulting.

I get two reactions. Both start with surprise. One ends in disbelief and then pity. The other ends in something like "wow, I really admire you". But half the time, I don't believe that. So 3/4 of the time, it ends in pity. And that is NOT how it should be.

My only advice it to try not to let it get to you too much. They don't know you, your life, what you've been through, or why you have made those choices. You are the only one who knows what is best for YOU. And know that at least I have been through the same thing.

I have had that happen. They made me start getting a pap smear when I was 16 years old. I go when scheduled. They don't even ask if I'm sexually active anymore. They just assume its so. I don't bother arguing. I just say, I'm not seeing anyone right now.

Since when did it become popular belief/assumption that is is abnormal to NOT have sex at such an early age? This really concerns me. I know it has alot to do with the way sexuality is portrayed in the media. But is really that powerful?

I'm sorry the doctor's office made you feel weird about your abstinence/celibacy. That ain't right!

You have my support and the support of many others here. Don't let it get you down. Learn to love yourself and get excited about every path you are on. You are on the path of abstinence/celibacy and what a beautiful direction to be going. The path less followed and you are so worthy of this path. I just wish more people understand this path and how worthy and special they are.

God loves you so very much..!! And His love is unconditional and He accepts us just the way we are, unlike the world.

I'm so sad to hear that it's a stigma to feel that it's right to wait to have sex until you are ready. Why do we have to be in such minority?

Thanks for the support, guys. The majority of people either don't want to believe it or don't understand why I've made this decision to be celibate. It has nothing to do with God or reputation, like I've said before, but it is a life choice that I've made for myself, for my well being, for my future and for my own self worth. I comprehend that we only live this life once, and to just flaunt such an important aspect of our lives around like it's nothing makes that part of our own being seem worthless too, and that is not a regret I am willing to hold on my shoulders for the rest of my life. When I have that chance it will truly mean something; it will mean that even if it doesn't work out with that person I at least had the strength to respect myself and rise above the influence of the majority.

I know people act really dumb about that..that happened to a gf of mine....those doctors probably think everyon is a slut..idk if your a christian or not...but this a def example of our sinful world...and when you are living a virtous life people make fun of you which is so messed up ...but idk...people are just haters forget thoser medical staff

In response to Alisha...thats why I will never go to a gyno until i get married cuz all this pap smear test stuff...is only necessary to get once you're sexually active and since im only gona have only one sexual partner .my husband i dont need it now...and i have friends in the medical field and they say some of those exams can break your hymen and are very painful if you are virgin so that is a sure No! for me...im just fine with my regular check up...no gyno needed here...i can do my breast exams myself..thank you !! lol

forealzchola: I went to get a checkup at the gynacologist when I was 19 because I used to get severe pain and cramps during my periods. I took hormone pills for about 3 months and the problem went away. There is also a history of ovarian cysts on my dads side of the family, so that is also why I go to get a checkup once a year, not because I am sexually active. Everyone has their reasons...

oh i know everyone has their reasons..im just saying sometimes you have to be careful with a gyno because sometimes they might force you to do things which are aganist your morals or that can even physically damage your hymen

yes because with the pap smear exam and other vaginal exams..your vagina has to be open and widened that it is very painful and will tear...and unless you fight for your rights and stand up for yourself..many people will obligated to do something "that a doctors says you should do" when that is not the case..thats why you research things for yourself and know your body..so that no one can harm it or misuse it
