wishing you a Good Friday!

OK, time to regroup.
Instead of going to the 11:00 service on Sunday.......we're gonna go to church Saturday night at 7 instead.  Sara was worried that I would have to try to stand the whole time at the 11 am Sunday service.  Talked to Sam and it works out great!
Sara was going to have Saturday free of singing, but the girl who was going to sing has the flu.  It's too late to get someone else at this point to learn all the songs........so Sara is taking on the 3 - 5 - 7 pm services on Saturday as well.  That's a lot of CHURCH............LOL, well it is!  SEVEN SERVICES......holy cow!  It sure does give many people with varying schedules the opportunity to worship.
Church sure has changed........lots more flex, mix that with a more casual atmosphere of dress.......and it's really nice to go.  I liked church once I GOT THERE as a kid growing up.  But I did not like the insanity of getting ready........with seven of us, limited bathroom access......all the usual chaos and mayhem......
"MOOOOOOOOOOOM I can't find my shoe............!"
"Moooooooooooom, Carol has my socks!"  "Mooooooooom, Dan pinched me!"   Dad bellowing remarks & threats.......Mom probably thinking we were all fruitcake.  Once or twice we almost left with out baby Donna.............
Big teen brother John hoped nobody would notice him hiding, but he was drug along into the tide with the rest of us.  No rest for the wicked, if Dad had to be roped into a necktie, everybody had to suffer and learn about GOODNESS.  So off the boys went with a clean neck & ears red from scrubbing - both of them butchwaxed/brylcreamed until their cowlicks behaved and those grim ropes called neckties went around their young necks too. Parents really cracked down once the Beatles invaded America!
We wore patent leather shoes made ready with pencil erasers & vaseline petroleum jelly for shine. (new shoes had to be scuffed on the sidewalk so ya don't fall down, we LOVED being ordered to scuff ANYTHING!) Snowy white lacy anklets and crinkly  itchy stiff poofy crinolines beneath our Easter dresses.  A regular slip is one thing, but a big old slip like that is is like wearing a giant sticker bush.  A body can't wait to shed it......the first few twirls ARE FUN, but after that, burn 'em, burn 'em all!
getting there in one piece was another issue..........."he touched me", "she's on my side", "he gave me cooties"........cooties was a big threat in my day.  nobody wanted the dreaded cooties.  gooooooodness, we were a noisy bunch.
on rainy Easter mornings, my folks used to hide the buried treasure throughout the main floor of our home.  it was so much fun to spy a nestles chocolate bar on a window sill or tucked in the book shelves.....to find all the colorful Paas eggs we'd dipped & decorated.  the festivity and mess of Easter basket grass.......that stuff takes weeks to be removed from a house......it gets into everything! back then i really believed that the Baby Ruth candy bar was named after me.  Nobody could tell me otherwise.
Easter Church was fun...........everybody SMILED so much.  Adults indulged our impatient wiggling, leg swinging, drooping eyelids........nothing knocks a kid to sleep faster than a preacher during a sermon.  Parents today could save themselves a lot of time and aggravation by taking a busy active overexcited toddler to church.......they conk right out most of the time.  Not babies...(babies just howl)....toddlers nod right off.  LOL!
So I need to gear up for church tomorrow evening and then plan for Martha's Sunday at one.  Sara & I are going to go get her present on Tuesday probably.  She has to go  to the dentist on Monday now......seems like dental problems sure are making the rounds of late!!!!
Sara's hubby wants to go with us...........we're all so weird.........getting a big kick out of this whole thing........(the nose piercing in a tattoo shop, they are gonna take one look at us and spot our nerdy geekiness.......) sara has a more bohemian rocker edge but it's subtle......more hidden beneath the surface. They used to call themselves "beauty & the geek."
those cookies are calling my name..................they are so seductive.  if you could see them, sitting there in those clear containers, the frosting is so pretty, little tiny sprinkles, the cookies are so soft.........even the Peeps are looking like credible snack options.  I could all but swear they are waving at me!!! All the containers are just a few feet away.  DANGER WILL ROBINSON, DANGER!
I ate some banana yogurt with a red spoon.  don't ask, ok, here it is ----  It makes me feel like I'm having an ice cream sundae OK?  in the south when you go to a Dairy Queen they always give you a red spoon..........so if i stick a red spoon into yogurt it feels like a PARTY!
My headache is slipping away........thank YOU Ibuprofen........!  Time to leave you to it........later ya'll.

I can totally relate to all of the above childhood memories! Seems we had less kids than you did, but just as much chaos! Being the preacher\'s family, we always had to be early for everything, and behave! Dabnabbit! Or dad would give you \"that look\" from the pulpit, and we knew we were in for it when we got home. NEVER chew gum. For some reason a Live Saver was ok though....never actually did figure that one out.

The service you didn\'t mention, or maybe didn\'t have is the Easter Sunrise service. Easter morning, we were awoken at four thirty! Had to be at Echo Lake Park by six for the sunrise service! It was held on a beautiful hill, and yes the sun did rise as we were listening to the preacher outside. It was always wonderfull.....then, back to church where we had a mega breakfast at 8:30. YUM...loads of scrambled eggs and bacon plates already made up and you could just keep eating till you were stuffed. Now, we\'ve been up since VERY early and we\'re still just gettin going here. After breakfast was Sunday School. By now we\'re all totally exhuasted, cranky and just wanna go back to bed. BUT NO! After Sunday school we had a communion service in the Sanctuary. OK, now it\'s noon! So Easter Sunday was always a day of complete rest, once we got home from church. Even parents went straight back to bed.

No choir practice at five or youn people\'s at six. Just an hour seven o\'clock evening service. PHEW. I did this my whole life. Just seemed normal. I\'m thinkin I still miss it. I know I miss my mom and dad and brothers all piling in the car......Yep, the Easter Sunrise Service.

We do have grand memories, don\'t we!!!

LOL.. just loved your journal... every bit of it.... ~ It brought back some memories of my own... the first time I wore a slip and a bra to my cousin\'s wedding when I was like 10... OMg I couldn\'t get that stuff off fast enough and to know then that wear all that was going to be in my future. LOL

Easter eggs are fun. My daughter is 25 and I still make her hunt eggs... but they have $$$ in them (the plastic ones) and we still dye them.... much fun... w/ glitter ~~! I sent her eggs to her this year... she lives 1500 miles away now.

Yea, \"church\" has changed since we were kids... and no one worked on Sunday back then... and ppl were much more laid back. I\'m glad they are accommodating. I even sometimes go to \"church\" online... LOL (the church my hubby goes to has services live on line.)

Hope u enjoy ur wkend... sounds wonderful....

This brought back so many memories for me, too, even though we are on the other side of the world.
DarlaC, this is the first time I\'ve heard of your Easter Sunrise Service. It sounds wonderful.
Yes, church has changed since we were kids. Life was simpler back then.
