Why was I so sick?

Umm.... good question. No e. coli, salmonella or any of their friends, no parasites, not even any arsenic. Yeah, they tested for that -- none of the usual suspects panned out.

Whatever. I'm home for the 2nd day in a row, actually eating again and my system seems to have remember that, by and large, fluids should exit via the bladder, not the express to the basement.

It's nice to be on good terms with food again. Food and I, we're great friends. We go WAAY back.

Hope all are well or better!

hugs.

Oh, my gosh! I can\'t believe you were sick that long. How horrible! I\'m so glad you are eating again. I love food too. I can\'t imagine being separated from it. It must have been hell. Much love.

This is great news Jack!!! So glad to hear that you\'re home and holding down some real food! I\'m glad your doctors took this illness seriously and hospitalized you. Presumably you were getting some kind of nutrition since you couldn\'t hold food down. Did you lose much weight?

I bet it feels good to be home with Mary Anne after such a long hospital stay. Hoping that you continue to regain your strength and feel much improved every day! Gentle hugs, Huelani

Yes, it\'s great to be home and eating. I dipped below 140#, but I think I\'ve stabilized above that now. That\'s about 15# off since Jan 21. I was on fluids and IV potassium almost the whole time I was in the hospital.

Better now! :-)

Good ~ I\'m glad that was something they could do for you in the hospital to be sure you were getting some nutrition. I can see why eating solid food is an enjoyment you\'ve been looking forward to! Eat healthy and I hope you can gain some weight back slowly.

I\'ve been eating almond butter and putting coconut oil on my food to gain some weight since I don\'t eat any sugar, fruit juice or processed foods on my doctor-prescribed diet. It\'s a challenge to gain weight mostly eating vegetables and quinoa! No pizza on my special diet either ~

Mmmm.... almond butter and coconut oil ... yum. Can you eat Nutella? or is there too much sugar in that? The docs recommended against fruit and fruit juice for me too, but I\'m confused about their recommendations; whether they\'re for recovery from diarrhea/vomiting or for the long term. I have an appt. with my primary next week, so I\'ll get clarification them.

So sorry about the pizza..... :-(

My diet is long term for CFS. No sugar, fruit juice and limited low sugar fruits (berries, lemons, Granny Smith apples) because sugar spikes our blood sugar levels which stresses our adrenal system ~ and we know that\'s not a good thing for CFS. I\'m fudging a bit at this point as I\'ve been on this diet for 1-1/2 years ~ my diet is also gluten-free and dairy-free other than plain Greek yogurt. I\'m fudging by eating other varieties of apples (I eat the almond butter on apple slices) and some wheat (a little multi-grain organic bread). I\'d have to check the grams of sugars in Nutella but I\'m guessing it\'s too high for me.

If I wanted to go to a lot of effort to cook gluten-free, I could have gluten-free pizza crust. I\'m just not that ambitious to cook for myself that way. My doctor-prescribed diet is an anti-candida diet ~ candida is a yeast that is growing in my intestines and supposedly weakening my system. I don\'t know how much I believe the candida yeast is a big problem for me as candida yeast grows in everyone\'s intestines. I did have a blood test done to measure it as one type of candida yeast was somewhat elevated in my blood. The whole candida yeast thing is very controversial. Some alternative doctors believe it\'s the main cause of illnesses such as MS and some have had \"miracle cures\" from having patients on strict anti-candida diets. At this point I think eating such a limited diet for such a long time is a bigger problem for me as I\'m bored with my food. Dinner is chicken/quinoa/veggie stir-fry or chicken sausage/quinoa/veggie stir fry or salmon/brown rice/veggie stir-fry. I eat 4 days in a row of chicken sausage to use up the package before I switch to salmon, then 4 days of that. You get the idea ~

BTW I eat 100% organic at home ~ that includes eggs and meat as well as produce. That\'s because I had breast cancer. I don\'t trust that our bodies know what to do with all the weird chemicals and pesticides. Not eating any processed foods gets me away from all the weird chemicals. The big thing now is that chronic inflammation causes a lot of diseases. So eating to reduce inflammation is a good thing. Those diets tend to be vegan ~ or shy away from a lot of meat. The meat portions I eat are very small. One chicken sausage is 3 ounces and that might be all the meat I eat in a day as I usually eat steel cut oatmeal or Greek yogurt with sunflower seeds for breakfast.

There\'s an organization called the Environmental Working Group that scientifically tests produce samples every year to determine pesticide residues. They issue a list of produce that they recommend to always eat organic and which they consider OK to eat non-organic. I don\'t have a lot of expenses other than food beyond rent/utilities/car so I pay the extra to eat 100% organic and I don\'t have to worry about it. Here\'s their website:

http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/

So that\'s probably WAY MORE than you wanted to know when you asked if I could eat Nutella ~ LOL! BTW I\'m also not supposed to eat peanuts or peanut butter ~ but that\'s an anti-candida thing. Organic almond butter is a lot more expensive than organic peanut butter ~ but for the time being I\'m still staying with the almond butter. Maybe I\'m being superstitious at this point ~ who knows with all the conflicting nutrition information out there?

I don\'t know if anything I said helps or it\'s all more confusing. You\'re right to ask your doctor\'s recommendation to find out if it\'s for your recovery now or for the long-term. Reducing processed foods and sugars is recommended now to help prevent diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, obesity ~ basically it\'s a healthful thing to do. All those health problems have increased drastically since the 1950s and introduction of all those packaged foods. OK enough of my soap box talk :-)

Hey there Jack.So sorry to hear that you were really sick and in hospital.Happy though to hear that our Jack is back !! Take it easy.Huelani just reminded me about all of my naughty food fall downs lately . It\'s so hard to stick to a strict diet . I\'m supposed to be off all sugars and juice and all carbs for my hypoglycemia and adrenal fatigue. I do well for a while but always lack that required self discipline. I just scoffed some big sweet juicy mangoes.YUM!! The fried chippies I ate yesterday were so good too, lol!! OK fresh start tomorrow . There\'s always tomorrow.Love to you Jack xo

Jack , sorry to hear you were so sick. How terrible! Did they ever figure out what it was? I\'m happy to hear you are recovering back at home. Renee

Hi Renee, thanks. No, they never figured it out. While I was in, they said we may never know any more than \"Must have been a bug\" and I guess that\'s how it will stay. So much better now though! I hope you\'re well - hugs. Jack

Huelani
sugar spikes our blood sugar levels which stresses our adrenal system ~ I knew that (sorta), but am not good about minding the rules.

One GOOD thing that came out of this round of sickness is I finally got an adrenal insufficiency test and am going to see an endocrinologist on 3/1. Have to see what/if anything comes of that.

Another good thing is they tested me for celiac and it was negative.
Mary Anne makes some wicked kick-ass pizza on Mama Mary\'s gluten-free pizza crusts ready-made in the grocery. They\'re about 6 in diameter, I think 4 to a bag. They *might* be near the tortillas, depending on your store.

Quinoa, rice surely there are other acceptable options. Have you ever tried spaghetti squash, or made zucchini noodles? I\'m pretty sure allrecipes.com has those. We\'ve tried the zucchi-noodles and thought they were very good. (\'Spaghetti\'! Mmm!) There are some very good veggie meat subs out there too; we love Morning Star Farms (griller?) crumbles and their Garden \'burger\' patties.

I happened to get a taste of Aidell brand chicken meatballs & sausage & other items at a product demo in the grocery store some time back, and they\'re delicious! I can\'t be sure if they use organic products, but they certainly care about their sourcing check http://www.aidells.com/our-way/exceptional-ingredients. With what I know about the loopholes in labeling laws for \'natural\', \'cage-free\' and other like terms (they\'re almost completely meaningless), I prefer foodies who follow Aidell\'s model than merely \'organic\' (which, in fairness, does mean *something).

Totally agree with you though, about all the Frankenfoods and just plain what-the-hell-is-this-shit manufactured food out there. We have 2 million years of evolution to use just plain -food- behind us; this crap they\'ve been churning out since the Green Revolution is NOT in that program. Of COURSE our bodies don\'t know what to do with it; of COURSE it produces inflammation.

Soapbox... yeah, I got one too. :-) I don\'t know if you\'re being superstitious or not, but I\'m downright paranoid about the conflicting nutrition information (disinformation!) out there. I don\'t believe in conspiracies, but I DO believe in \'convergences of interests\'.

Anyway, I hope some of this might help... Hugs from your pal from Maine, Jack

Hi Di! Good to hear from you...
mmmmmmmmm...... mangoes..... ;-)

I guess we all have to behave ourselves a little better. But as you say, we get another chance to to do better every day.

Does anything I wrote above to Huelani that might help you, too? Hope so....

Love\'n\'hugs to you too.

ps Ummm.... \"fried chippies\"? like chips? Or budgies? (Don\'t ask me why that was the first thing that popped in my head, neither of us wants to look at that too closely....)
