Triggered yesterday

The day was going well. Initially I was a bit unsettled as I had to take my SiL to a work place injury appointment at the same organization that I had to use (different location). She was assessed by a physician and two physiotherapists at the same time, then an occupational therapist. They were all great. The final appointment was with a psychologist, who we expected to be the easiest to work with. Wrong. This woman demanded I leave the room during the assessment, despite my SiL contradicting it (for her own security and safety). She became aggressive stating I would understand why and that they just needed to get it done. I tried to advocate saying it was up to Jess, as it's her appointment. Furthet aggression and rudeness, so I rolled my chair out of view and didn't leave. My SiL stated she wanted to know why I couldn't be with her (a question she genuinely had) and was met with resistance and aggression. The entire session went that way. Jess answered her questions as tightly as possible, ensuring this woman could see her discomfort. Jess was severely triggered during this appointment, as was I, as this type of psychological abuse is what she's experienced her entire life. This woman was demeaning to her, abusive, demanding, and openly mocked her. Jess was livid, as was I. Jess and I discussed it on the way home, and agreed she'd call her own mental health case manager before reporting it to her workplace injury case manager. We talked about how inappropriate it was on the way home, how triggered she was, and how invalidating this woman was. When we were approaching home, I shared it was triggering for me due to my own injury and experience, and was the exact reason I insist on being at appointments. I nearly started crying. She started to cry while leaving a voicemail for her own case manager, who followed up and said to never remain on a call like that. It sounded like he had her back and would support her to ensure this never happens again, as it could have been a significant set back.

As for me.... I still had to be a therapist after all of this. We got home at 2:30 and I had to be at the office for 4. I left the house pretty quick, drove to pick up dry cleaning, and had a full blown anxiety attack. Multiple actually. I was bawling my eyes out, hyperventilating, and my chest felt like it is was so tight I couldn't get a breath in. I blasted my anger processing song ("hold on"), sang and screamed while I drove, and just felt everything. After I felt it, I tried a quick EMDR brain processing trick at a red light. I crossed my hands on my lap, pictured my beach as best I could, and tapped. I do think it helped a bit. Leaving my own emotions at the door and being someone else's therapist was absolutely draining. I feel like I should still be alseep now, and it's 3pm the next day.
