the loveliness of an ordinary day.
this morning seems like 100 years ago now.......i remember combined relief/joy after managing a shower safely......it wore me out, so i got back in my pleasantly warm bed and drifted back to sleep. later had scrambled egg in a tortilla.......easy way to go. strawberry banana yogurt for a snack. nice & light.
then sleep followed by sleep followed by that old stand by, more sleep. waking up in the evening is hopefully a temporary readjustment. we have a lot of rain heading our way.......still recuping from the last round.....they are already issuing flood watch warnings for this week-end.
scanned the frig.......had a 1/2 lb of ground beef, 1/2 a small onion, half a jar of spaghetti sauce. found a can of ranch beans.......mixed with the 1/2 items made a small batch of chili. that will be good for a couple of meals over the week-end. honey cornbread & chili in winter.......yum!
i unpeeled and smashed fresh cloves of garlic for the first time in all of my life yesterday. i had thawed the roast as plan b in case i couldn't manage to go out for Christmas. it was patiently waiting to be roasted.
Rachael Ray makes everything look so easy........i found the big knife and laid it against the garlic clove......and hit it with my wimpy little fist..........didn't help much! then i came at it with my rolling pin.......don't ask! it seemed like a good idea for about 4 seconds but it was too unwieldy........then i opted for a can......a can of food to bam down on the knife edge to get to the garlic clove goodness.
sauteed the garlic, browned the small roast.......when that was done i poured a can of Progresso Creamy Mushroom soup over the top, added a cup of water........but it STILL needed something......so I added 1/2 pkg of frozen green beans. foiled it good and tight in a glass dish & slid it in to roast nice and slow. i like roast to fall apart at the touch of a fork.
so good on top of jasmine rice! When Sam & cousin Logan stopped by with the dvd player.........which was thoroughly appreciated, they both said the smell of garlic was OVERWHELMING........ uh oh!
sam said it was like getting hit with a huge wave of toooooo much garlic........oooops! just call me Mama Italiano.........
guess i got carried away playing bam bam with a can! (giggle giggle) used way too much garlic!!!! (i could smell it at first, but after the first half hour i couldn't smell garlic at all..........is that normal?)
noticed that after i eat the garlic roasted meat my sinuses dry up. is this normal? is this a cure everybody knows about 'cept silly ol me? or is this just a coincidence & nothing to do with garlic at all?
the guys headed off to the big church parking lot......Sam is teaching Logan how to drive a stickshift. Sam stopped at the bottom of my mean long driveway and offered to let Logan take over the controls......Logan said, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" can't blame the lad, nobody should have to tackle a steep driveway for their first lesson...........since Logan is in military school he isn't always sure when someone is serious or just joking...............I told Sam to be nice, but it's one of those GUY THINGS........once Logan knew it was a joke everything was ok, they were yukking it up!!! guys.........!!!!
enjoyed watching Mary Poppins start to finish VERY MUCH.......... can't believe how many of the songs I remembered..........as in remembered almost all of the words from memory........supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
I took a lot of children to see that movie during my babysitting years..........movies like that helped me manage a lot of hardship in my youth. i had a lot of responsibility as a child........grown up responsibility and having characters like Mary Poppins as a role model with my mother hospitalized the majority of my youth.................gave me a lot of pluck - helped me see how "just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down!"
it helped me encourage my sisters - helped me have more understanding with my Dad trying to parent for two...........helped me not get so flustered managing school, doing the majority of the cooking and cleaning and trying to fit in growing up too.
i tended to gravitate to kind uplifting people growing up because i knew the opposite all too well ........i needed reasons to look up, reasons to celebrate........reasons to make it through hardship.
today i heard that Selena Gomez has been battling lupus for two years now.......she is just 21.......lupus is such a difficult autoimmune disease...........
i am in love with this therapeutic mattress pad. it is so pleasant.........so good on aching muscles & joints.............it's like immersing yourself on a warm fluffy cloud. not too hot, not too cold.........very pleasant. the kitties burrowed under the blankies & they love it too! we are officially as snug as three little bugs in a rug!
............it is time to go to bed again........night! yes, i'm praying for you and thinking of you and wishing you smooth sailing ahead. let's all pray for each other..........g'night guvnor!

My daughter trained as a pastry chef and worked in the field for a few years. She is not a fan of Rachel Ray\'s methods - not explained well or demonstrated in a realistic fashion. You might have better luck watching a youtube video on garlic smashing! Then at least your house won\'t smell like Little Italy next time you make a roast - LOL. I can totally relate to your love of a movie like Mary Poppins - I grew up in a similar situation with a mentally ill mother and it\'s a tough thing to deal with - having to be grown up before our time. Glad you could sing along to all the wonderful songs!
You make the cooking thing sound so easy, too much garlic aside. Hope it tasted delicious.
