That's me...totally insane
Anyone who lives with an alcoholic is completely insane. The hope that tonight will be different...that tonight he won't drink so much...that tonight being with me will be more important than the drink. Stupid woman...what were you thinking? You will always be his second love.

Substance abuse is \'self-abuse\' and someone that abuses \'self\' cannot love anyone truly, even himself, until in recovery. If he recognizes he has drinking \'issues\' you may support him in his recovery. If he does not see himself as having drinking \'issues\' then you will need to exercise good \'self-care\' and perhaps consider Al-Anon for some needed support as alcoholism effects everyone involved and all become ill. Al-anon will not only give you the tools to cope but will help you to better help him find recovery.
It is important that you are not \'co-dependent\' with him with his drinking.

Alcohol is \"what works\" for pain in a large number of people.
They are dependent upon alcohol, but with their own Psychological Triangulation, they likewise have fear and anger that balance their lives as well.
I see substance abuse as a coping mechanism...an indicator of a larger problem.
I am against 12-step programs, overall. One size chokes all, from my perspective.
