Rest in Peace Grandpa Joe... Still can't believe it
I woke up this morning (friday nov 14) to find out my grandpa Joe passed away. I keep remembering times we spent together, laughing at his jokes, laughing at the fact we didn't understand his jokes, laughing in continuation with his laughter even if it wasn't funny.. He always made everyone laugh and smile, he was so strong and so positive, something I will treasure forever. I will never forget the day he honored me and shared stories about his time serving in WW2, as a German. It's always been a topic that isn't brought up around him, always "taboo" because he never wanted to speak of it (understandably) but one day he started telling me stories, and showing me his war wounds, surprisingly he had such a positive outlook about it and was able to laugh during his stories, even though they were horribly morbid times surrounded by death and hardship. Joe was a man that could always make things positive, he was always good for a laugh and he will never be forgotten for that, and he will always be missed. Even now, I remember all these wonderful times and I feel happy inside, and then I say to myself "he's dead" and it doesn't feel real. I haven't been able to actually voice that "he's dead", I've voiced that he's passed on, but never once the word dead. It's so scary to say. I'm going with my dad to visit my grandma in the morning, I'm so concerned about her, and I can only imagine how she's feeling right now... they were married for over 50 years (her 2nd husband-not my bio grandpa). He had a life goal, he wanted to live to 92, his father died when he was 46 of a heart attack (I believe) and Joe since wanted to double his dad's lifespan and live to 92. He did just that. He would have been 93 this upcoming January. It's going to be so sad not having him around for christmas, but I know he's in a better place now, with his parents, war companions, and other friends and family. I will always keep him close to my heart.
