Practical Counselling Session Revelation
I had to participate in a practical session for a counselling class. I had anxiety going into it about having to play the role of client, so I decided to focus on the stress of balancing school work, my back injury, and returning to work. I didn't even realize that I had stated I was misdiagnosed multiple times until my instructor brought my classmate's ("counsellor's") attention to it. I became extremely emotional when my instructor said it sounded like the misdiagnosis was the key element. I was shocked at how upset I became. I felt the need to apologize for getting upset about it during a class assignment; it felt like a simple topic to discuss. My instructor helped me realize that it's not necessarily the misdiagnosis, but the impact this injury has had on my life and the duration that it has taken to reclaim my life, due to being misdiagnosed and mistreated. It's great to finally be improving, but because it took so long to actually deal with the injury properly, my body weakened severely. I can now only deadlift 15lbs, whereas I was working with a trainer before my injury and could deadlift 80lbs. Even when I first started working with my trainer I could lift heavier than I currently can. It feels pathetic. It feels defeating. I know I need to focus on the future, focus on how far I've come, how much I've improved, but it's still defeating. I still hate feeling this fatigued, this weak, this pathetic. I look forward to getting stronger than I was before this injury, I know it's possible, it'll just take time.
