Hiya Bertha
I come slowly out of sleep and realize its very windy. Unusually so. I have a sense of foreboding.
grab the iPad, check the weather. Aaaah tropical storm Bertha, no threat to Jamaica but her bands will cause thunderstorms for several days. Sigh of relief .. No hurricane.
The water pouring into my room was absolutely unexpected. Without warning the skies had opened. Thunder, ligtening, winds tearing at the house. Driving the water inward in ways i had not anticipated. i shout to my son to close the windows, especially to the front of the house. He is scrambling from ground to second, to third. too late. Water is pouring into my home on all three floors.
I am again royally ticked with the roofer i hired some years ago. He charged twice the going rate, he assured me the quaility of hIs work merited it. I am standing under a section of the roof he did and water is pouring in on me, i am soaked. This is one problem that has no easy fix, I have thought about it for years.
sofas are soaked, magazines, books..we are wading through the kitchen. I turn off the electrical, pickup extension cords from the floor all too aware of the risk of electrocution.
i realize that once again, some of the soaked items will be lost forever. Ah well...
we are safe now, the thunderous gusts have receded, giving way to a steady but tolerable downpour. we still have power. Gonna dry myself out now and give thanks it wasnt worse. Tomorrow we cleanup.

Oh dear, that wasn\'t good, so glad you switched the power off.I can\'t help but think that a lot of tradies in Jamaica are major dodgee, after all the stories we have heard from you. What a pain, now the roof is leaking after all the other problems you have had.If this keeps going on I will just have to ship off a couple of young, ,muscly, tall, dark, handsome, highly qualified tradies from Aus to show those guys how it\'s done, hey.Reckon you could handle that? Maybe just give them a little wink and a vegemite sanga and I\'ll tell them no labour fees, just free labour because you deserve it after all that stress.Hope you know what a vegemite sanga is.Bye , hugs, Di xo
i\'m glad you and your son are safe............the storm damage is a whole other thing. it will take some sorting and time........and precious energy which is a commodity hard to come by for us.........you said foreboding and i started to pray.
honey, honey........i can just see your son racing from window to window........so glad you were able to cut power to keep ya\'ll safe.........hope and pray that family or friends can come help get things in the sun......i had a home flood years ago and it was so hard to cope with.
it\'s a long story, i\'ll have to tell it someday.........got through it but it was very difficult. friends and neighbors bought every cheap laundry basket for miles and turned the driveway, deck, porch and lawn into a huge sorting drying chamber.............i am praying for you..........can you get some big fans to pull the water out? here we have companies that can come in after a storm or flooding, it\'s usually covered by homeowner\'s insurance and these enormous fans draw out the vast majority of water over a period of several days...as long as needed. you didn\'t mention carpet, so i assume you don\'t have any of that to contend with.........that house had a fully finished basement and it was all berber carpeting. .......primarily my son\'s domain during his teen years.
praying for you and your son.........hoping you can manage to call in troops to help, family and so on......cause you still have some important healing to do........don\'t go all gung ho and try to do this stuff all on your own......promise me please?! hugs, so sorry this happened to you dear friend........xoxo.
I need to send my husband to Jamaica. He re-roofed both our house and my mom\'s house .... did a great job on both.
Somebody needs to put these scam artists out of business!!! It sickens me to think not only of the damage done to your furnishings, but to the structure of your house, too, all because of this guys incompetence and lies.
I hope the cleanup isn\'t too hard on you. Just the stress from a situation like that can send a body into a cfs crash.
At least you know your brain is functioning well .... very smart and practical to remember to turn off the electricity.
May God carry you through this and use it to bless you in ways that only He can do.
Oh MAX! I\'m so sorry this has happened to you! The one thing that jumped out at me right away (so I have to say it now, or my brainfog will erase it) is to watch for mold beginning under all that wet stuff. Mold is sneaky and it will hurt you! OH! I\'m so ticked off at those idiots you paid to roof! Grrrrrrrr! Can they be reported? Can you sue??? You\'re gonna need money to replace ruined things.
Goodness! After hurricane Sandy devastated the North East over here and I saw hundreds and hundreds of peoples wet, ruined beds and couches floating away, I just prayed to God that someone would be good enough to supply the funds to help them rebuild. This brings back the memories...so many stories, where homes were just ruined by flooding.
I\'m so sorry. By the time to read this, I\'m hoping you are well on your way to restoration of your home. Thank the Lord, your family is safe! xo
