high school triggers
An old high school friend, lets call her leslie, someone who I once considered a best friend, posted something on facebook that indirectly insulted those of us who are upset about the election result and that we should “move on”. I feel so much anger towards Leslie. My mind travels back to high school - a very bad time. I think of how much i desperately needed Leslie. I thought of how incredibly insecure I was and how bad I felt about myself. How I kissed Leslie's ass, and accepted her treating me horribly so that I would have any friend at all. How I picked her up with my car every day for years during high school. How she felt that picking her up was not a big deal and she never even thought to thank me beause somehow I was the lucky one. I notice that her facebook posts are backed up by her entourage of “friends” that tell Leslie that she is so wise and should run for president herself. They let Lesile know how smart and wonderful she is. I notice that her entourage worships her just I like I did. My high school self, her name is Ally - comes out. she is scared of isolation and death. She believes she will end up feeling so bad that it wont be worth living. there is no love or warmth in her life. I prayed that Leslie would not drop me as a friend. that is how desperate I was. Leslie's posts are a reminder of Ally's desperation. I need to remind myself, I don't hate Leslie, I hated how isolated and alone and worthless i felt. I think of how far I've come. i’m no longer that person. During todays meditation I heard, “follow the triggers from the election - let them lead you to your healing.” My high school friends post allowed me to get closer to my high school self and understand her better. I can cry - I can empathize ally. She had it so hard and I can feel that now so acutely. I can use the triggers of the election to heal.

It's wonderful that you can use the triggers of the election to heal. Leslie does sound obnoxious but in the end she's not even important. Ally is important and her healing is important. It's so sad to think of her believing that without Leslie her life would be so barren that she would want to die. It's so sad to read that there was no love or warmth in her life. Thank God she has you now to love and admire and appreciate her.
(((hugs)))
I was bullied in school and I feel-felt much the same and I am sorry to hear you had to feel it too.
Thanks Doo and Donnawanda :)
Triggers are little windows into what we need to heal. As awful as they are to feel they are also a blessing and I am glad you can see that. I am glad this interaction has brought so much clarity to the situation and brought you closer to Ally. She sounds like a bright wonderful girl who will flourish with your love and guidance. ((Hugs))
I love this part: "I need to remind myself, I don't hate Leslie, I hated how isolated and alone and worthless i felt. I think of how far I've come. i’m no longer that person."
I hope you can also respect your brain for finding Leslie and latching on to her so that you could have a friend - even though she was shallow. Friends are so important at that age in our lives.
Thank you LuckyEmpath - triggers are little windows to healing. Thank you JournalReader- for reminding me that I did need a friend (or at least needed to not be alone). My definition for what is "good" has changed so drastically that I forget that I did what I needed to do with what I had at the time - It's sometimes so hard to see the good in the bad especially with what is relevant now compared to what was relevant back then. Thanks everyone :)
