Happy Labor Day!

Hope you have a blessed Labor Day !

I found this wooden compass at a sidewalk sale and brought it home to paint.  I prepped it with a coat of white paint and then painted it with Garden of Eden Green........after breakfast I'll either add more paint or call it good and hang it.

I'm going to put it on the left side of the front door.  I thought since I have black shutters and a red front door, this vibrant green would serve as a pretty accent piece!  I found it at the Decor Store during their sidewalk sale.

if i had even semi better painting skills i can see how cool it would look if the star was outlined with another color and then paint the N,S,Wk,E a third color.....probably the red and black already on my house.  but i don't think i can pull it off......i hung it up and i like it!

they sell these on etsy.com for $35 (not inc ship or tax fees), i got mine for $15.  yay!

meanwhile i'm painting other things....using spray paint already in my arsenal i painted a tiny footstool a deep hammered green...plan to put it at my feet to relieve leg tension....

then i painted a black metal candle holder that has sat on my dresser forever a soft french blue.  and finally i'm took on something my Grandfather made for my Grandmother.  My Grandmother had polio.......as a result of that this tiny woman had to use crutches for the rest of her life and she also had to wear special shoes. one shoe was stacked very high to even out her legs.  She never complained,  she was a very hard worker......but she was very remote to all of us.  I rarely remember her smiling......I never got the feeling that she liked us let alone loved us.  But Grandpa loved her so there must be something very special about her.  He was as tall as she was tiny.....he very much resembled Abraham Lincoln.......when he spoke to me his eyes had the most wonderful twinkle always.

I don't remember them ever hugging any of us......sometimes Grandpa would do the awkward pat on the arm or shoulder.  They came to this country from Germany and knew many difficulties there and in transitioning to this country.  They had a very productive dairy farm......a very nice home in town.  But when she passed and I was asked if i wanted a keepsake I chose this unique wooden footstool made by Grandpa's hands.  I sanded it and then painted it french blue.  I don't know if I should have painted it, but in all honesty it was not a good kind of distressed worn out black, it just looked rough.  So i decided to pretty it up.....to give Grandma some beauty now, something she may not have had much of struggling with crutches and pain.

I may have misunderstood her severe nature by not realizing she was in a lot of pain........the power of looking back/getting older, a tad wiser.

Laundry will be ready to dry soon, kitchen is tidy, I'm showered and dressed.  WOW.  this is gonna be a good day until it hits again later....what should i do with this glorious day?  hmmmmmmm.  i could drive to Fort Yargo and walk around the park for a bit.  i could sit by the lake......that always feel nice to the senses.  i could visit dairy queen later for a delicious silky ice cream cone.......still feels like a special treat.  i could drive over to suwanee, they have an area with shops, restaurants, picnic area, and they have some very cool big art installations to look at!  like a giant humpty dumpty for example......that could be cool!

i could sit on my porch and take in my yard.......bake something, cook a nice dinner.......i wish you could see all the pretty yellow butterflies in my yard....a few years ago i talked bruce into planting butterfly bushes and they bring in the prettiest winged creatures.

i feel so guilty, a couple of years ago i decided making nectar and cleaning the feeders for the hummingbirds was too much work, so i sold the feeders at a yard sale.  then this spring i painted a metal hanging thing, it's a bird cage with birds inside......it used to be blue and this year it became red.  whoops, what was i thinking?  i have seen so many hummingbirds coming in for a drive through meal and then BLAMMO, it's a fake out.  no food.......not even one drop of nectar.  makes me feel like a butthead.  i need to repaint this metal thing not red.  soon.  sigh.  this  wall of shame moment is brought to you bg a silly goose.  i can fix this.  with my spraying trigger finger!

why spray paint? well, it gets me out into the sun for a little while.  VITAMIN D is needed ...... it gives me a purpose, it improves my interior or exterior living space.  it keeps my mind active planning little affordable projects......and compared to the furniture group i redid for sara and derian recently these lilttle projects are super quick so i get to see the results very quickly which makes me feel more successful.  on this day i DID something.

the rest of the day i may be lying down, napping or listenlng to the tv with my eyelids down, but for a little tiny bit i did something.  it helps my mental health.

the journal screen is off today, i can only see some of what i have typed, so weird, what is happpppening DS?

hugs to all, xoxoox ruthie

Hey there Ruthie soul. I like the compass too...a lot for some strange reason. I had an Aunty Val with a big built up black boot and iron leg stirrups due to Polio. She was a cranky old woman. She was married to my darling uncle George, but left him one day. Left the three kids with him too. Mmm..she was probably in a lot of pain too. I think that little foot stool is a gem Ruthie. There would be many unknown stories attached to it for sure.
I love hearing about all your little creative projects Ruthie. If I still had my own home, I would be more creative and inspired....maybe ? Bye love Di xoxo

Hi Ruthie, I love the compass, too. My husband's mum also had polio as a 5 year old and wore a caliper on one leg. However, she was the loveliest person. It's good to hear about all your craft projects. I think the blue stool sounds good, too. I would love to be creative but I'm not. Love xxx Pam
