Candida, FODMAP, probiotics, depression, anxiety, IBS and more

I started antibiotics when I got out of the hospital this month, and I think I feel better, physically and emotionally. I got curious and googled 'probiotics mental health link' and found a couple of interesting articles. Maybe you'll find them so too.

"A decade ago a research team led by Nobuyuki Sudo, now a professor of internal medicine at Kyushu University in Japan, restrained germ-free mice in a narrow tube for up to an hour and then measured their stress hormone output. The amounts detected in the germ-free animals were far higher than those measured in normal control mice exposed to the same restraint. These hormones are released by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which in the germ-free mice was clearly dysfunctional. But more important, the scientists also found they could induce more normal hormonal responses simply by pretreating the animals with a single microbe: a bacterium called Bifidobacterium infantis. This finding showed for the first time that intestinal microbes could influence stress responses in the brain and hinted at the possibility of using probiotic treatments to affect brain function in beneficial ways. It really got the field off the ground, says Emeran Mayer, a gastroenterologist and director of the Center for Neurobiology of Stress at the University of California, Los Angeles.
"Meanwhile a research team at McMaster University in Ontario led by microbiologist Premsyl Bercik and gastroenterologist Stephen Collins discovered that if they colonized the intestines of one strain of germ-free mice with bacteria taken from the intestines of another mouse strain, the recipient animals would take on aspects of the donor's personality. Naturally timid mice would become more exploratory, whereas more daring mice would become apprehensive and shy. These tendencies suggested that microbial interactions with the brain could induce anxiety and mood disorders."

"Since many folks with irritable bowel syndrome also have anxiety and depression and the evidence base for the treatment of IBS is large, it makes sense to try probiotics if you have symptoms of both irritable bowel and depression or anxiety. The three strains of probiotics used in the trial are used extensively in formulations for irritable bowel as well. I would like to see trials of probiotics combined with fiber to feed them, or trials of probiotics during a low FODMAP diet (a specific type of diet that can starve the microbiome, potentially killing pathogenic strains while the probiotics are taken to fill in the gaps with friendly microbiota) followed by gradual reintroduction of fibers with the probiotics in people with irritable bowel, anxiety, and/or depression."

Oh, my good, golly, gosh! That is incredible! I have IBS, depression, and anxiety and everyone has always said that the anxiety caused the IBS. It is interesting to think it may be more complex than that. Thanks for sharing. Much love.

:-)

I\'ve been seeing a lot of recent research calling the gut the \'second brain\'. The gut will run perfectly fine by itself, even in a brain-dead body, and creates many of the same hormones (including serotonin) and neurotransmitters as the brain.

I think that work with the germ-free mice is astounding, Game-changing, really.

FJ: I can\'t keep track of time or remember either, but fortunately my phone excels at that. So I set repeating calendar events WITH ALARMS on my phone for *everything*. We humans build these machines to make our lives easier let\'s use them! They know their place they have power buttons. We have thumbs. It\'s a pretty obvious hierarchy. lol

Love and Light to you, dear sister. xo
