Another Tall Tale

The Mouse Aquatic
A rainstorm lasted for days. The power went out and that meant that the sump pump stopped working, which meant that water started pouring in through the foundation walls from the wetland. "What", I asked myself after I got the generator running to power the sump pump "was it like in this old cellar a hundred years ago before electric pumps?" There is a brook running through the cellar on driest days, and once I swear I spotted salmon spawning under the water-heater. On this soggy day, I was squatting in my knee-high boots in the shin-deep water, watching the pump and waiting for the water to go down when I heard the splash of an expert dive. I turned around and saw water rings rippling and spreading out from the splash that started right next to the foundation wall. I waited and watched the water surface ripple as a tiny furry back broke the surface, blew out a puff of breath like a miniature whale might, and dove back down. Up popped a mouse face with cute mouse eyes, cute mouse ears and cute mouse whiskers. She climbed out and up the foundation wall, where I could see that she looked almost exactly like a house mouse except that she had webbed paws and a flat tail for swimming. She took a breath and then she executed a perfect front flip - kersplash!
