I am going back to yoga class later...have a friend going with me so I am going to try to get some emotion out now...usually I have a cryfest every night, want to try to get it over.
I wanted to wear one of Cassi's tee shirts but wasn't sure if that was okay. I have a deck of Doreen Virtue's Angel Cards, so I shuffled the deck and pulled a card at random and got Omega, which is for Victory, so I took that as a yes, I can wear it.
I can't describe how much of a voyeur I feel like going thru her things. It feels disrespectful to me, to just have access to all her thingsand it is worse than that. She had beautiful blue eyes, crystal clear. When she was at the funeral home, I lifted her eyelid. It was cloudy and gray. I felt horrible about doing that and still do...feel like I invaded her privacy or something. I don't know if this makes sense to anyone, but it was how I felt and still feel.
My husband is the warden of a state prison here in Florida, and we live in state housing, the warden's house. I actually love the house and we have plenty of privacy...but also on the state grounds in a firing range. Every employee has to qualify with the weapons once a year. I can hear them, the gunshots. I can't stand the sight of a gun.
All this time, over 5 months, and I still wonder what the hell happened and if it did actually happen. It doesn't make sense...our last phone call, January 31st, a Friday, she sounded upbeat. Sunday, February 2nd, we got the call. ..and I am still living, my heart is still beating and I just don't understand how that is possible or why it is possible. I spoke to a friend of my mother's today. Her husband is very sick, waiting on an organ transplant and I was telling her I was more worried about her than him because if I had the choice of being the one to go or the one to stay I would most definitely be the one to go...then I had to backtrack and say "I don't mean he's going, well, we all are eventually". But you know what??? If I had to choose...between me and Cassi...one of us living and one not, I would still want her to be the one to go because I would never want her to go thru what I am going thru.
I have a million things running thru my head all the time...trying to make sense of all this, because I just have to make this count...I have to do some good in her honor. I am working on a speech, or a presentation...hoping to speak at schools, churches, anywhere that will have me...telling my story, Cassi's story...hoping there is some kid I can convince not to give up. I don't like public speaking, don't like people looking at me and there is no way I am emotionally ready to do this. But I have to try...no not try, I have to do it.
Also, her birthday is coming up...so I have to make some kind of decision about how to handle it. I think just taking to my bed for the entire month of August would be the easiest thing for me to do, but I would feel guilty about that too. I don't know if I should have something at home...the week, THAT week...She died Sunday and we had her funeral the following Saturday...it seemed like hundreds of people were in and out of my house. I didn't like it at all...I hid in my room...I only came out if we had to go somewhere and I would make my way to the laundry room and out into the garage before anyone saw me. My husband was a rock...he stepped up, handled all the people while I hid in the dark and overmedicated, just trying to stay asleep. I couldn't be a gracious hostess...how could anyone??? Still don't think I can. Also there are complications, friends of Cassi's that don't like each other...everyone feeling guilty but a lot of finger pointing too. How can I honor the date of her birth??? How could I possibly top that date, 23 years ago?? There are no easy answers and at the risk of sounding like a pity-party, nothing in my life has ever been easy.
I feel lost...right now, it will most likely pass. Thank you sisters for "listening", reading, my journal entries.

Gina, I totally understand, hiding away from people. I didn\'t know how to act \"normal\" and talk to people. I felt he was my child and nobody but me felt the pain I was feeling. I know that wasn\'t right, but that is how I felt.
I have done nothing special on his birthday, because it hurts so bad, I try to get busy and put my mind else where. It seems to be the only way to avoid crying and panic attacks. How many xanex can you take, and not become addicted ??
I did touch my sons\' face, while he was in the casket. I never thought about lifting the eye lid. I am glad I didn\'t, because I want to remember his beautiful brown eyes, as they were in life. OMG!! Everything I am writing sounds so morbid. I am sorry, as I just wanted to comfort you.
Doing public speaking against suicide would probably be very hard, but you could make a difference. I think you are incredably brave to be thinking about it. Oh, BTY....your husband sounds like such a blessing :)
((((HUGS))))....Julia
Hi Gina. It is so hard. Birthdays, angel days, holidays. The memories are so poignant at those times. I tend to cocoon at those times. I light candles, sometimes go through albums and cry a lot. There is no right or wrong way to honor our kids on those days. I think we have to do what feels right to us.
Your idea of speaking is a great way to honor Cassi. But perhaps plan now what you would like to say, and give yourself more time to grieve before you go for it.
I think you are feeling particularly down now because you have been so ill. It takes time to get your strength back after such a serious infection.
As for Lisa in the casket. I could not go and see her in a cofffin. I was there when they removed the life support and said my good byes. As I said, we do what feels right for us. I think the fact that Cassi\'s eyes were no longer blue indicated that Cassi was no longer there. Our bodies are merely vessels.
Just know you are not alone and there is no wrong way to grieve.
Love and hugs,
Marlene
So many times when I read people\'s journals I feel so lost... There\'s no way to fix it.. no we just have to live with it... I have thought too how hard it would have been on Cara if I had died... we were so close... I\'m way bigger than Cara... so the only clothes of \"hers\" are clothes of mine she \"borrowed\" I put that in quotes and I\'m smiling... because Cara started \"borrowing\" my shirts when she was around 12 or so... and oh I loved the smell of her on them... I was so flattered that she wasn\'t repulsed by my size and me. No Cara never made me feel ashamed... So now I have this one shirt... its an aqua colored T Shirt... I was so glad when I lost the weight again so I could wear it... I don\'t think Cassi would be upset at all... I think she\'d be so glad to be so close to you... and you to her... Its hard... nothing I can say will help... but oh I hope you feel her when you wear her shirt. I totally know she will feel you. Hugs Elissa
Dear Gina,
By some major miracle, I made it thru Charlie\'s birthday this week. I don\'t know how. Please try to hang in there.
Warmest of Hugs,
Donna
Hi Gina,
I too am dreading the month of August - not only is it my daughter\'s birthday but mine also.....I HATE IT.....But as Donna said, she made it and so will we. ((hugs)) Vicki
Hoping that yoga was what you needed it to be. If wearing something of Cassi\'s is what you want to do then do it. My husband wore one of our son\'s flannel shirts till it was worn thin.
I understand needing to see Cassi\'s eyes, as I did the same thing, yet in the hospital when my son was on life support. I had to look to see if he was truly there or not. I got my answer when I looked and knew that he had one foot in the spirit world and as much as I wanted him to remain in his earth suit I knew that the peace and healing he sought could not be found here. That moment is seared into my being forever...
You will make it through August and your daughter\'s birthday. My son has a birthday next month too and we will help one another. You will navigate it as best as you can and however that looks and feels is okay because it will be what you need.
Lots of loving care today and in the days and weeks ahead,
XO Joanie
Hoping you made it to yoga and it helped a bit. I know exercise is supposed to make us all feel better, but i haven\'t been able to make it. So, maybe reading that you did it will motivate me too. I\'ve got Jackson\'s tshirts, and haven\'t yet been able to wear them, but will. I can\'t imagine that Cassi wouldn\'t be happy that you were wearing her t-shirt. Wishing you peace, Laura
I had a bit of a ritual in the beginning before I could leave the house. I\'d take a long hot shower, hot as I could stand, and scream at the top of my lungs while the hot water washed over me. Somehow it helped.
I gave away almost all of Kala\'s clothes, but kept a lot too. I instantly started wearing them, and still do...mostly PJ pants now, but at first I wore everything. Somehow, for me, it was like being closer to her. I also have about 100 t-shirts that I had made with various photos of Kala and quotes. I wear these still....almost everyday....but, I am moving into \"real\" clothes more....just went shopping the other day and have some pretty nice things for Tahoe! Anyways, this whole idea of what\'s right or wrong regarding our children\'s belongings is a tough one to work out sometimes. Truth is, the only \"right\" is what feels right to you....right now. It may feel totally different tomorrow and that\'s OK.....do something different tomorrow.
I look back at the zombie I was after Kala\'s accident. SO out of it, and yet, I was the \"perfect\" hostess. I\'m sure it was a sickening thing to see that no one could possibly understand. But when someone would come over....which was non stop for about a month or so....I would turn into this \"happy\", smiling, crazy woman making sure my \"guests\" all had plenty to eat and drink and a comfy place to sit. It was pretty ridiculous!!
I begged, pleaded, bargained, and demanded God return Kala to me on this earth for a long time. I begged, pleaded, bargained, and demanded God take me to Kala, allowing me to leave my earth life behind. Neither was a possibility. I no longer wish for either scenario. \"I\" am finally at a place....the place I need to be....where I understand Kala\'s human experience was what it was and mine is what it is and I have a responsibility to LIVE my life as a human to the best of my ability for as long as I am on this planet. Wishing it away is an insult to Kala and to my God......IN MY OPINION OF MY LIFE. I judge NO ONE for their opinions or choices. Knowing, and I mean knowing that I know that I know, Kala IS and is in PERFECT LOVE, makes it possible for me to live my life doing all I can to achieve the purpose of my souls journey here on this earth. And that purpose is to learn LOVE, to be LOVE, and to share LOVE, as best I can until I return to Perfect Love.
You will (probably) stress more over this first birthday than any of the ones to come. The firsts are always the hardest I think. But I know that I know that I know you WILL honor Cassi!!! How? Because I know Cassi would tell you the same thing Kala once told me.....\"Mom, I\'m proud just when you try your best, whatever that is\". So, \"try\" not to over think it or over stress about it. Just try to do what you think YOU can do with as much passion as you can muster and that is good enough.....MORE THAN ENOUGH!
Thank you for sharing your heart so openly with us and thank you for allowing us to know Cassi through you. We truly fall in love with all \"our\" kids!
Hugging you tightly and sending lots of positive vibes your way~~
I am dreading Patrick\'s birthday as well. I am making a memorial sight at the back side of our pond where he used to fish. I am getting a bench and planting a little garden. A place where his little boy can play and think about him. I think I will let off balloons. It is the thirtieth of July and this month has been the hardest so far. He was my one home birth and our connection was strong early on.
I definitely think a ministry to kids and churches is an awesome plan. Funny how it can change our ability to speak before people, this love for our kids. You are doing fabulous, you really are. One foot in front of the other...if you ever want to take a trip up north....Maine is there for you...for any of you. Lovingly, Lauri
I have a few things of Jenn\'s that I wear and I don\'t feel guilty, I feel warm, knowing she loved these items and I do too.
I have never \"celebrated\" her birthday, which is tomorrow by the way...not since she\'s gone...except last year because my nephew chose that date to get married, so now it\'s not just Jenn\'s day, it\'s also Mark and Kenny\'s day. ..
Hugs and hope the yoga went well. Guess that\'s out for me since all my orthopedic surgeries this year...lol
Hugs, marylou
I have a candle (battery powered) It is white w/ glitter and wax dripping so it looks real. I burn it for his birthday or just when we all get together as a family the grandies set an extra plate we turn on the candle and acknowledge him. At Christmas I take it to work on my desk because his Angel date is 12/20. On that day it is lit all day. I have tried to keep it simple just for me, I know he is here this way he knows I am thinking of him more than usual.
Hugs Penny
I am finally able to touch more and more of Shell\'s things at first I had freinds come and take things away...now slowly they bring them to me?? When is Carri\'s birthday? Shell\'s is August 9th....I do have NOW(2yrs later) a funny story..I wanted to wear a piece of Shell\'s jewelry to the funeral and when I went to get the jewelrybox off of the shelf I put it on in her closet it fell and hit me in the head...Lindsay my other daughter said,\" Mom she probably wanted to hit you in the head for a LONG time...\"LOL!!! Take care of your self..YOGA is good I do sling yoga when I get there....gretch
Hi Gina, Eddie had beautiful hazel eyes. When he was little I used to refer to them as Emerald eyes. I lifted his eyelids when we were leaving the funeral home for the last time. i wanted one more look into his eyes. But when I did his eyes were different. there was no color, no life in them. I realized then that truly our bodies are just a shell, a suit we live in for this world. He had moved on..to his heavenly home just like Cassi.
The first birthday after Ed passed was only 18 days after he died so we did nothing..cry, cry, cry. the second year we had a small gathering and I served his favorite foods and gave a donation to his favorite charity, St. Jude\'s Children\'s hospital in his honor. That did help as I felt his gifts continued. Whatever you do be gentle on yourself. there is no right or wrong in how we observe. Love to you and Cassi, Linda
