$4,500.00 PILL A MONTH KEN MIGHT BE ALIVE

Why does it seem that you feel you can make it and then your thrown right back into the pain, the heartache, the emptiness....of your child gone...
Everyday, Every time I watch TV, they are always advertising Cancer Treatment Centers...and they show these wonderful looking people riding off in their golf cart...or walking hand and hand with each other....as if it is the best time of their life.
Stupid ads I think...there is not real cure for all cancers...even when Ken was sick going on the internet, doing research...it's your not dying of cancer, your living with it like a chronic disease.....WHAT a STUPID...way to put something that is probably going to get you in the end...No matter how long you fight, no matter how much meds they give you, no matter the hope....it is generally the cancer that gets you.
Sometimes it is so difficult of seeing these ads daily...thinking where was the cure for my son, my neighbors who were gone her less then 3 months after finding the cancer, he after 1 year....Why do they make such light of that there is a cure...
I don't care what some think...people need to know the truth...they know your fighting for your life....and your lucky if your body can fight the disease for a longer period....
My son lived 2 years and 23 days after we found out about the cancer...and he was fighting it everyday of his life.....
Ads are fine, people need to know where one could/can go for the best treatment...but ads that make cancer look so easy...by their ad...I say help yes but don't make it looks like an easy road to travel.....It isn't...
So where is the cure...where is the hope...where was the...your going to be in remission....well it didn't happen in my son's lifetime....but maybe one day there will be...but only of someone is not making a lot of money off it..
In the very beginning that I had forgotten about until about a month month ago, I remember that there was a pill that could help someone survive certain cancers.
Here is the catch...$4500.00 per month for one pill...Who has that kiind of money...and I guess that is why we never talked about it again....
Medicines I take cost about $900.00 per month...yet it was a generic drug which ran not much over $50..00 a month....just as their patent was about to run out, they pulled it off the market,,,,took the generic off the market, said they changed some of the ingredients therefore, they will now have it tied up at the higher price for the next ten years....therefore, when one is sick, you have to try to find something your can afford.
I wonder, if my son or our family could have afforded that $4,500.00 per  month for that one pill...would I still have my son alive.....Who rules...The cost of care is more than most of us can't afford....so we do the best we can...we end up losing our loved ones....when can that ever change
I wonder why cancer patients can't get the medicine to keep them alive...why is the cost have to be so high.....

Couldn\'t agree more - I support the health care bill, although maybe it could have been done a little slower given that people hate change even when they vote for it! I work with the elderly and medicare is probably the most efficient , cost effective health care vehicle available despite all the propaganda otherwise . No wonder the insurance company lobbyers didn\'t want the public option.......oh, and have you noticed that no-one who rails about less government has offered to do without their government run medicare? Sorry - my rant now. I hate that the richest country in the world (.. not for long...) can\'t seem to deliver a decent, basic health system to everyone. Why would anyone be opposed to that? Oh, yeah....it\'s that change thing again.....

P.S. ..... those Cancer Treatment Center commercials piss me off too. There is more money spent on advertising drugs and hospitals than on care.....

I am with you Sandi. Everyone. I know that Andy\'s doctors were good people and that they sincerely loved him but the chances of survival were nihil from the get-go and I\'m the only one who knew it and prepared. Andy sure didn\'t want to give up... he wanted anything, to buy time. BUt...The writing was on the wall. I have told my family that if I ever get any cancer more serious than a tiny mole or lump which can be cut out, FORGET IT. I am NOT doing chemo or radiation.

Sandi one thing can comfort us. People with all the money in the world die of cancer. Those $4,500 pills don\'t save lives. Senator Kennedy had the same cancer as Andy... he had surgery at Duke, could have afforded medicine made on the moon, and he survived no more than the statistical average. When I let myself agonize at one point about not having taken Andy to every hospital, especially Duke, I remember this about Kennedy and know it wouldn\'t have made any difference. Only broken our hearts.

All so sad. I feel our collective rage and sorrow and completely understand it.
Love, Sarah

p.s. I didn\'t mean that I\'m comforted by people dying of cancer, money or not, obviously! ONLY comforted that the factor of money doesn\'t save lives. So we can stop beating ourselves up about that.

I had to come back! If you\'d lost your son because of our woefully heartless healthcare system you would welcome change, any one of us would.

I\'ve a friend, Bernadette, from France, she gave up her French citizenship so that her daughter could attend Annapolis. She regrets it everyday. She has bad diabetes. Her father died from it at her age. In France, she would be given insulin, here, there are times she goes without. Her divorce was messy, she works, but there are times she simply has to go without. I have seen her ashen and sweaty, twitchy because of the neuropathy in her hands and feet and have felt very concerned for her. BUT she does not have access to insulin! AND her doctor doesn\'t just give it to her even though her doctor has tested her blood sugar levels and they are off the charts. She has to wait for her ex to send alimony and pray. She eats exactly as she should, 5 small meals a day and eats healthily. Her daughter in law is a nutritionist who writes a column. So she is a healthfood nut. BUT still there are times when she is a mess.

She\'s very bitter about our system and regrets ever giving up her French citizenship where she would get all the insulin she needed.

This is my cause and my crusade. Losing a child due to lack of reform (which many want to go back to) would light a fire under any of you as well.

Too many equate \"socialized\" medicine with some communistic idea. It is not, it is humane. The rest of the civilized world has it, why not us? GREED.

I lost my grandma to cancer, and I know just how you feel. It is so awful how people can be so greedy. I wish we could treat all the sick for free.
