Women who Love too Much Community Group
WHEN BEING IN LOVE, MEANS BEING IN PAIN... This group is to help women through the journey of realizing they can love themselves. To help realize that they are capable of having a happy, healthy, whole relationship and break the cycle of abuse and heartache from loving emotionally unavailable men.

Last night I ended a 15 month relationship, the longest I have had since my marriage of 8 years ended 6 years ago. I had read WWLTM over 2 years ago and discovered this forum and had gone through what I thought was a significant process of self realisation and growth. Yet coming back to the forum after 18 months and reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde I find that I had only succeeded in graduating from emotionally unavailable men to a classic Jekyll and Hyde man.
He has broken off with me countless times during out time together. The last time was four months ago when we returned from a nightmare of a holiday to England. I had discovered I was pregnant just before we left and miscarried immediately after arriving in England. All the way through the planning stages of the trip he had said he didn't want me or my son tagging along with him. During the Jekyll times he would agree to us going and then almost immediately turn on us for daring to come with him on the trip. While I was in hospital waiting for surgery, he had the full care of my son who has Aspergers and to this day had not forgiven me for it. He was very abusive during the worst of times on the trip and as soon as we got back, he broke up saying he would rather be alone I experienced cognitive dissonance of the worst kind because this was the same guy who was so loving to me when he realised I was pregnant. Now he was treating me like crap.
I had a lot of his stuff at my place, so after a few days recovering at a Sanctuary for Women where I received rest time for reflection and counseling, I drove over to his place to drop it off, but talked myself and him into getting back together again. And my excuse was if I was not in his life, he would go back to his old habits of frequenting brothels, strip clubs and massage palours on a regular basis. To this day, he swears he has not gone to any of those places in the time we have been together, but it does not matter anymore. What matters is my realisation that I had tied myself to a balding 45 year old tending to fat around the middle who has never grown up. That the guy who is all lovey dovey with me and makes me feel a million dollars is the same guy who did and does all the bad stuff.
My son is having mental health issues at the moment and I think they are partly linked to seeing us fighting all the time. His dad and I despite all our problems never fought, so the constant bickering was taking a serious toll on someone I needed to protect as mum. And the last straw was the realisation that I could not really talk to my boyfriend anymore. If he didn't like the topic he would just hang up the phone or shout at me to shut up not caring about whether we were in public or not. And he would always have a reason for snapping at me which was all my fault. When I tried to explain that whatever the provocation, snapping was not a nice way to treat someone you loved, he walks away.
Last night, I was at his place. He wants to maintain his "independence", so refuses to move in with me ever. But as he had started spending most of the week at my place, the inability to charge him a reasonable rent for costs was wearing on me. He couldn't afford it because he needed to pay his own mortgage for the house he insisted on maintaining empty for him to escape to from time to time. We had a conversation about risk taking and I made a remark about his past promiscuous sexual behaviour and that led to a horrendous argument, which led him to break off with me while insisting on dropping me home. I refused to go home and we eventually made up. But he consumed a large amount of alcohol in the afternoon, another attempt to explain how I felt about him went wrong and he turned into Mr. Hyde. He spewed forth some terrible stuff he had held inside for a long time and called me a cow and how he was now going to go back to his old lifestyle and that I was not going to be able to stop him. We survived the night without too much argument and this morning he made the hour's drive to my place with all my stuff and picked up everything he left at mine. That marked the end of our relationship.
As he left, he came to give me a hug and tell me he loved me. I refused to even look at him. This was it. I have finished it with him. No more going back. I called a couple of friends for support and logged back on here. My next steps are to remove my Facebook Profile and find things to do to occupy my time. I can do this. I do not need him anymore. I had begun recognising the codependent nature of our relationship after the second or third time we broke off. But I always told myself I needed him in my life for the sake of the good times we shared. That is not true. I deserve to be with someone who can treat me in a consistently nice manner. Not this good cop/bad cop routine. I have had enough and I am going cold turkey. I need your support my lovely ladies.
Thank you.

Thank you.
I love your idea of pampering and taking care of yourself. As I read the top line of that section I decided to have my tea in a beautiful vintage tea cup set that I have been only looking at, not using. I felt special and lovely just holding it to my lips, and the tea tasted so much better. It sounds like you are having a significant breakthrough.
And yes, yes, yes---when we are caught up in all the drama we cannot see the forest for the trees. The important thing is to remain very aware of a pathology of a person, of a situation, because then we are able to distance ourselves from it and it is not so personal, and we are better able to rationally cut our losses and move on.
I had bought curtains for my bedroom a few weeks ago and hadn't had the motivation to put them up. Today I have been on a cleaning spree and the curtains have been replaced. It will be a pleasure to sleep in that room tonight....
This morning I had a weak moment and thought I was a bad person for giving up on something he and I had both invested in. And to be fair to him, he really tried. But it is the pathology we have to be aware of and understand that thinking we could change people that much is simply wishful thinking and that it comes at a great cost to ourselves and those close to us.
As I go through my day, I also realise that I don't miss him as I did my ex husband when he first left. My ex did the vacuuming and lawn mowing, heavy lifting, putting the dishes away and took care of rubbish. I had to learn to do all those things when I suddenly found myself single after 8 years. My bf was not a helpmate in any way as far as my day to day is concerned. He might cook dinner or do the dishes or make me a cup of tea, but I am used to doing all of it anyway, it does not bother me that I have to get up and make my own coffee. I also used to do a lot of work at his house because he hates housework. Again to be fair, he never asked me to, but I had no choice if I wanted to live in clean surroundings. A lesson to people who are so desperate to maintain their independence, that they fail to see their leaving has minimal impact on the other party.....
Happy to hear you are getting through every day with something positive. Its going to be tough and you will have ups and downs but its all part of the grieving process.
When I first came here I used to post so many lists about 'why does he do this?!'… and it has taken me so long to realise it wasn't him it was me and how I reacted to the things he did. As in coming here to vent instead of setting boundaries with him.
Things with him are steady for me at the moment.
when we first met he told me he loved me within the first week or so. My friends said to me ' what! - run for it, thats crazy talk!' but to me it is perfectly normal. Every guy I have been in a relationship with has done the same. So to me it was normal. I don't think I have ever had a healthy relationship so I didn't understand what they meant.
SO he told me he loved me in the first week, then I think I felt that it meant he wouldn't leave me, does that make sense?! , and so it was 'safe' to get into this with him. But he is so very controlling, he sold my car while I was out, I relocated to live with him so I have no friends, I am not encouraged to do anything independently of him, especially work. He does nothing around the house and just sits and waits for me to look after him. And as I don't work I feel this is my 'role' my payback for not working. We are a team but only on his rules. He gives me an allowance and tells me I must spend it on food. He has forbidden me to use my credit card but has recently told me he has debts of £56k pounds. …
his good bits, he is 'kind' and says he just wants me to be happy. He is generous with money when he wants to be, but then stupidly mean unexpectedly. We don't argue. He comes home every night, and doesn't drink. He is 'devoted' to me…..or so he wants me to believe.
But I am not sure he knows who I am!
I confuse myself with all this!
So what do I do.?
I focus on me, I plan things for myself to do, I save a little when I can., I detach from caring about him and what he wants all the time, I used to get very upset if he so much as slightly criticised me. and I was exhausted. I am now on antidepressants and have gained 30 pounds.
also I am an artist and I cannot create anymore.
But I am trying. and I am learning and I am working to unravel who I am, and who I want to be.
This forum has saved me many times.
Stay strong, and focus on you.
xxx one day at a time.
I don't know who I am either so how can I expect him to. I haven't been authentic with him but have made myself into who I think, or thought, he wanted me to be. I am working on that.
I am scared to be 'me' fearing always it won't be enough. that I am not enough.
Thats what I am working on.

Sunny I'm sorry to hear that you cannot create anymore. I am in a creative field as well. I have found in my healing journey that I have artistically reoriented myself many times. As a love addict, 4-5 years ago almost everything I created was inspired by some man in my life. That has, very slowly, changed. The inspiration they provided was extremely powerful to me and without that it was like: what am I about? What do I want to write about? Can I really feel as passionate about something else? I don't write in the same way anymore.
I say this b/c maybe your healing is causing you to have an artistic reorientation? I feel like any time we change our art has to change as well.
I will leave you with something I read recently which made a lot of sense. When you value yourself, you empower yourself. When you are empowered, good things happen to you...
Goingup..Thank you. I talked to the bank and they were surprisingly positive...Maybe it is little bit more than a dream....I am going to explore it to it's full potential and see where it takes me...
Sunny, your post was very compelling...I do understand how it is with relationship addictions, how it is easy to "lose" oneself in one where the other partner is domineering and controlling. He sounds much like my guy. We don't live together--if we did I'm sure there would be heinous issues I have not even yet imagined, lol. Since I have become more aware of the dynamics of our relationship I have made efforts to start the recovery process, but I see a long road ahead. I think that you are doing the right thing by trying not to focus so exclusively on him. You are making huge steps in simply saying what you did here on the discussion board, observing and realizing your own part in the partnership, what role you played. If you jumped out of the relationship there is a big chance you would get with someone similar (or worse). Keep working at your recovery and things will sort themselves out.
I, too, have put on weight since I've been in the relationship...and I often wonder who I am and find myself molding my personality and interests to suit his. I catch myself "deferring" to him, acting like he is superior in his knowledge to humor him, and so on and so forth (he has ego issues, as most narcs do...). I am trying to get out of playing the "games" with him (victim/persecutor), however, and am trying to develop my spirituality. I no longer consciously try to change him, though I catch myself praising him and trying to build up his ego more often than not. I regress every so often. There have been gains, though. Now that I am no longer playing the games he is much more aware of his own behavior.
Wishing you all a peaceful life where everything is beautiful and nothing hurts.
Hugs,
Artgrrl
GOingup - hmmm yes maybe, I am slowy getting back to it. I always had to have a reason to create and without that I feel too guilty to indulge myself…if that makes sense. The reasons usually that I can sell it….
so now Im stuck without a reason!!!
