Women who Love too Much Community Group
WHEN BEING IN LOVE, MEANS BEING IN PAIN... This group is to help women through the journey of realizing they can love themselves. To help realize that they are capable of having a happy, healthy, whole relationship and break the cycle of abuse and heartache from loving emotionally unavailable men.

Last night I ended a 15 month relationship, the longest I have had since my marriage of 8 years ended 6 years ago. I had read WWLTM over 2 years ago and discovered this forum and had gone through what I thought was a significant process of self realisation and growth. Yet coming back to the forum after 18 months and reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde I find that I had only succeeded in graduating from emotionally unavailable men to a classic Jekyll and Hyde man.
He has broken off with me countless times during out time together. The last time was four months ago when we returned from a nightmare of a holiday to England. I had discovered I was pregnant just before we left and miscarried immediately after arriving in England. All the way through the planning stages of the trip he had said he didn't want me or my son tagging along with him. During the Jekyll times he would agree to us going and then almost immediately turn on us for daring to come with him on the trip. While I was in hospital waiting for surgery, he had the full care of my son who has Aspergers and to this day had not forgiven me for it. He was very abusive during the worst of times on the trip and as soon as we got back, he broke up saying he would rather be alone I experienced cognitive dissonance of the worst kind because this was the same guy who was so loving to me when he realised I was pregnant. Now he was treating me like crap.
I had a lot of his stuff at my place, so after a few days recovering at a Sanctuary for Women where I received rest time for reflection and counseling, I drove over to his place to drop it off, but talked myself and him into getting back together again. And my excuse was if I was not in his life, he would go back to his old habits of frequenting brothels, strip clubs and massage palours on a regular basis. To this day, he swears he has not gone to any of those places in the time we have been together, but it does not matter anymore. What matters is my realisation that I had tied myself to a balding 45 year old tending to fat around the middle who has never grown up. That the guy who is all lovey dovey with me and makes me feel a million dollars is the same guy who did and does all the bad stuff.
My son is having mental health issues at the moment and I think they are partly linked to seeing us fighting all the time. His dad and I despite all our problems never fought, so the constant bickering was taking a serious toll on someone I needed to protect as mum. And the last straw was the realisation that I could not really talk to my boyfriend anymore. If he didn't like the topic he would just hang up the phone or shout at me to shut up not caring about whether we were in public or not. And he would always have a reason for snapping at me which was all my fault. When I tried to explain that whatever the provocation, snapping was not a nice way to treat someone you loved, he walks away.
Last night, I was at his place. He wants to maintain his "independence", so refuses to move in with me ever. But as he had started spending most of the week at my place, the inability to charge him a reasonable rent for costs was wearing on me. He couldn't afford it because he needed to pay his own mortgage for the house he insisted on maintaining empty for him to escape to from time to time. We had a conversation about risk taking and I made a remark about his past promiscuous sexual behaviour and that led to a horrendous argument, which led him to break off with me while insisting on dropping me home. I refused to go home and we eventually made up. But he consumed a large amount of alcohol in the afternoon, another attempt to explain how I felt about him went wrong and he turned into Mr. Hyde. He spewed forth some terrible stuff he had held inside for a long time and called me a cow and how he was now going to go back to his old lifestyle and that I was not going to be able to stop him. We survived the night without too much argument and this morning he made the hour's drive to my place with all my stuff and picked up everything he left at mine. That marked the end of our relationship.
As he left, he came to give me a hug and tell me he loved me. I refused to even look at him. This was it. I have finished it with him. No more going back. I called a couple of friends for support and logged back on here. My next steps are to remove my Facebook Profile and find things to do to occupy my time. I can do this. I do not need him anymore. I had begun recognising the codependent nature of our relationship after the second or third time we broke off. But I always told myself I needed him in my life for the sake of the good times we shared. That is not true. I deserve to be with someone who can treat me in a consistently nice manner. Not this good cop/bad cop routine. I have had enough and I am going cold turkey. I need your support my lovely ladies.
Thank you.

"What matters is my realisation that I had tied myself to a balding 45 year old tending to fat around the middle who has never grown up."
That made me laugh out loud! :D
"That the guy who is all lovey dovey with me and makes me feel a million dollars is the same guy who did and does all the bad stuff."
I hear that! Well, welcome back! I hope it's helpful for you.
Some of the memories make me want to cry. Others make me glad it is over. Yesterday I had his feet up on my lap to cut his toenails which had grown impossibly long. I am glad I don't have to do that anymore. My freezer is full of meat because that is what he likes to eat. Once I figure out what I am going to do with it, I am going to go vegetarian.
I just deactivated my Facebook account. The few friends i want to keep in touch with over this period have other ways of contacting me. I am staring at a picture of us together at a function last year. When I finish writing this, I am gong to put that away.
I knew what cognitive dissonance was, yet I wasted a lot of time trying to reconcile the two sides of his personality. But lately it had been easier to see his true form because he let forth a lot his negativity quite openly. Yesterday morning I couldn't stop crying. He was Dr Jekyll then and got very worried about why I was sad. When I told him I had hung around long enough with him that I was permanently infected with his misery, he promptly turned into Mr. Hyde.
I've done that, too. I'm probably still dealing with it. Yeah, that cognitive dissonance is awful! Dealing with a person who seems to have two separate identities is SO confusing. It's and awful, horrible psychological trap!
Won't miss the toenails huh? Can't say as I blame you for that! :P
I thought if I tried hard enough I could understand him enough to fit his negative actions into his nice guy personality...If I continued to see him for who he really was, that was because I was not trying hard enough:)
Now reading this book I realise he is a serious love addict and as I probably was a while ago. I had begun breaking out of the codependency cycle with the work I had done and could see it wasn't right. Nevertheless we had got caught up in this positive negative intensity cycle in the relationship and always thought if between us we avoid the low points, then we could always be in the highs. But almost always, he was the one to destroy the peace and inevitably find a way to blame it on me. I felt like I was becoming someone who I didn't recognise. Someone I went to for help and advice told me if I could love him unconditionally, then he would change for the better. But his behaviour was not conducive to being in that space.
The brothel he used to frequent is only a few feet away from the office where he works. At some lunch times he insists on walking around that area even though there are plenty of other places to go to. Even though he hadn't lived in my suburb, there is a brothel not very far away from my place which until I had met him I had been oblivious to that he once mentioned one of his friends had tried out and which he himself had considered going to, but was put off because of the name. Every I have to drive past either of these places, it brought home to me the despair of being with someone like him who had no moral boundaries. I argued with him that this was who he was and he calmly stated he didn't indulge when he was in a relationship he wanted to be in. Yet knowing people cannot really change that much, I didn't trust him to go out drinking in town by himself or go out of town on work trips. This caused us so much grief.
I wanted to get out the relationship so many times, but couldn't for various reasons. Yet this time I feel like i really see him for who he is. A man who needs a woman in his life to fuel the fantasy of being loved, something he did not get as a child and who he needs to view him positively at all times because that makes him feel good about himself. I was not allowed to have bad days because that extinguished the lamp of love that he needed to bask in every day. I know now he had trouble with healthy boundaries which was why he could not listen to me talk of my dreams without feeling threatened. He did not know where he stopped and I began and if I said something he felt compelled to give it me even when he did not want to. That made him angry and cause him to lash out afterwards. Birthday presents were a classic example. He listened intently to what you talked about the weeks before the event and spent lots of money to get something. Then he gets angry and makes you feel like crap telling you how he didn't want to do it and you made him buy it...Go figure....
My heart goes out to you, and I can identify with you, and I am so glad you have shared your story because I see so much of my own story in yours.. I love how you have described your situation, and the crystalline moment of clarity where you see him for what he really is. The Jekyll and Hyde totally resonates, I have experienced this so much in my relationships. The quote of not casting your pearls before the swine comes to mind.
Take care sweetie. You can do this! We are all here for you!

I think we have to take control of our minds and our feelings. We do have some choices as to how we allow ourselves to feel, don't you all think?
The rescuer in me always thought my love could save him. I have to learn.......he cannot be saved.
I decided today that I am going to begin a new relationship; with myself. The sexy lingerie, the nice dinners, the shaved legs and good grooming just for my sake and no one else's. One of my greatest sadnesses from this failed relationship was that he would not even allow me to speak of my dream to buy a house near the sea. It was liberating to realise today that I can allow myself to fully explore this dream without any interference from him or anyone else. Even though I don't have the money to buy anything right now, I have more of a chance of realising that dream on my own than with him..Strange isn't it what we refuse to see when we are caught up in all the drama???
