A counselor once told me "One day you will be sick and tired of being sick and tired" well I believe i've hit that point. Almost a year now that I have stood up to my AH and told him how I really feel about him and how I no longer wanna try to make our marriage work. After 30+ years of fighting a loosing battle and him always choosing Alcohol over me I just can't anymore. For the time being I have to stay for financial help raising my 2 granddaughters, I still have that piece of me that can't just put him out and make him support us while he tries to support himself. But i'm catching myself becoming more and more short tempered and not holding back my frustrations when he's drinking. Before I tried staying away from any confrontation and never would speak of how I felt or how his drinking effected me. Something changed in me and I can't for the life of me understand why now, am I standing up for myself, maybe if I would have done something years ago we wouldn't be where we are now.... I'm not getting younger and the fear of living like this for the rest of my life is very scary, I wanna know that feeling of a compaion that listens to me when I talk and remembers what I said without having to repeat myself over and over. I wanna be able to have a drink if I would like and not have to worry about taking care of someone that can't control their alcohol. I guess I just want my equal... Not someone who thinks they're way is the only way, someone you can't reason with or talk to. I so wish I had a group like this or someone in my life to tell me years ago what I know now. I will always love this man for what he has given me, my children, a home and him providing me with a decent life but my kids are the only things I would not give back, all of the rest doesn't matter!
Your story hurts my heart. Although, what you have been told...one day you will know...it is true. I sit here the first morning in an apartment that I rented. Left behind everything except my clothes. Still stunned...not sure if I did the right thing...but one thing I know is that last night I didn’t have to watch him drink and it affect me. Do I feel content...not yet. Will I? Not sure. Do I worry about what my sons will think and feel? That’s the hardest. What will his and my parents think? Not sure.
I just couldn’t do it. I needed peace.
Find peace, my friend. It will be comforting yet trying until you work through different feelings.
Dkay206 you are so very brave and I can't imagine all the emotions your going through right now. Ultimately all we want is peace and to be loved in the same way we love others. I wish you all the luck and strength to get through this time. You have done the hardest thing, I pray you find the peace you deserve xx
Dstrik: Just want you to know that you are not alone with that feeling of helplessness and utter defeat. My AH is slowly slipping away from me and there is nothing I can do about it but watch him slowly kill himself. I am in my 60's and too old to start over. I have thought about getting an apartment like dkay206 just did but am afraid he will kill himself if I leave. He has kids that have for the most part abandoned him. I don't have any so it is pretty much just the two of us. Most days I am just sad. He does not think he has a drinking problem but I know that he does. Weekends are all about drinking watching TV and passing out on the couch. He is a high functioning alcoholic able to hold down a responsible job during the week. So many of us on this site are in the exact same position. I have gone to al-anon meetings but still feel that same sense of despair when I come home. Watching the man that I love disentegrate before my eyes and there is nothing I can do. So sad!
Dk206 I'm at this point now where I am deciding to let go. He went to rehab for a month last October and I had so much hope. He slowly let his dearest friend back in. Our 6 year old daughter is starting to understand something is off with her dad, and I hate having to keep saying hes not himself tonight, he doesn't mean it...
Tonight he came to pick me up from work. I realised it's the only way he wont be tempted to take a drink. Last night was another bad night. I pointed out he hadn't been to AA in a while so he went. And returned drunk claiming he just loves drinking too much. I replied saying that I love my daughter and who he used to be. But that's the thing. We love the idea of what they would be if they stopped drinking. Like one loves the idea of winning the lottery. It's not real. I booked him into a hotel for the next two nights (he doesn't know it yet) and I will start looking for a studio flat for him. Not for me, for him. I will not turn my little one'life upside down because of his bad choices. Hell I'll even put the lease on my name for now if I have to, I'm sick of it. Sick of him snoring next to me so pathetically drunk. Sick of a,telling that dreadful smell of vodka, whisky or whatever the hell hes drinking. Sick of him hiding his bottles in drawers, under the sofa even in our daughters room. Sick of it all. But most importantly I am miserable and so deeply unhappy. I hope i have the strength to see it through. You are so very brave. I know what you mean by not having to worry about what state hell come back each evening. I was actually at my happiest when he was i rehab.
