Someone brought this up in another thread (can't find the post right now) and I wondered if this were a common problem. My AH's alcohol abuse really skyrocketed in the last 6 to 8 months and twice he's woken up in the night and peed in an inappropriate place. (Claims it's a "sleep-walking" problem he has... funny, he never sleep-walked before in our 20 year relationship.)
First time was about 2.5 months ago. Were were in a little camping cabin that had two cots (kids slept in a tent outside). He had been drinking heavily all day. I woke in the night to find him standing over me peeing on me! He woke easily when I spoke to him. That was fun....NOT.
Second time was last night. I woke to splashing noise and KNEW what it was. Sure enough, he was standing in a corner of our room, peeing. He'd had a bit to drink that day, but not as much as usual I must admit. Anyway, again, he woke easily when I called out his name.
My AH never did this so I don't have much input here, but I wonder, is he on meds? Could the meds have an affect on the night peeing problem. I've heard weird stories of things people have done while on ambien and I know, for sure, that my AH, if he did not have a mind to heal without the meds, would definitely need them to fight all the issues that make him an alcoholic to begin with.
My AH started wetting the bed about ten years ago. He wasn't on medication, but would get drunk and not wake up to use the bathroom. When he is on a roll it is many times per week! It usually happens when he drinks 18 or more beers in one day. I can't tell you how many times that I woke up in a wet bed. When it first happened I had to get a mattress cover - that way the mattress wouldn't get ruined. How is anyone supposed to look at their husbands the same after this? My kids didn't wet to bed on me, and if they did it would be because they were little kids - not a grown man. I started sleeping on the couch when I thought that he had drunk too much. In the last 10 years he started snoring really bad and wetting the bed. I would have been so embarrassed that I would probably not have drank again, but not him! One time he passed out in a chair of ours and had wet himself. He tried to tell me that he had spilled a beer on himself. I tried to believe it, until I saw and smelled the mess on the carpet under the chair!!!
Personally, I think wetting the bed or peeing whereever they happen to be is a common problem with alcoholics. I caught mine peeing in the dining room once. That was the only time it happened with my AH. But, many years ago I had a boyfriend that peed in the ashtray, the fireplace, my suitcase, his own dresser drawers, just about everywhere. Disgusting.
That was my husband's bottom...at least I think it was his bottom. It certainly was my bottom. Nothing like waking up to a passed out-grown man covered in urine. This was during his 1st relapse when I found out he had been drinking again.
He made a lame attempt to blame it on the dogs until I reminded him that the dogs were crated up. That was the only time that he had wet the bed. Too foul
I for one can say my husband has never peed at night...because he is a fan of getting loaded during the day! His favorite maneuver is to go to work normal time (6am) but leave "sick". Poor thing..so sick..needs to go home and turn off his phone. He proceeds to get so drunk he forgets to let the dog out and passes out on the couch. So when I come home from work, he has peed the couch but ironically...the DOG was able to hold it until I got home to let him out.
Haha!! That's what my AH says also when he pees in an inappropriate place. I wonder what makes them do this? Now something wakes me up when my AH gets up during the middle of the night to pee and I help him to the bathroom. OMG peeing on you!! I would have been pissed!! I can't get my AH to wake easily when he has been drinking heavily.
The same has happened to me. Every single night....Peeing onme, in our bed, on my clothes, in the hamper, in the tub, in the corner of our room. REDICULOUS! Nobeody deserves to feel that feeling when you wake up soaked in urine. It is so degrading and makes you feel worthless.
I personally believe it has to do with his sleeping patterns, obviosly how much he has to drink and weather he eats or not durring the day. If he drinks hard alcohol, I have found that it is almost guaranteed that he will pee. His excuse what that he needs to go to the doctor...NO SHIT! His reaction the next morning would be appologetic, he would be embarrassed, and I could tell, he felt like a scumbag.
Since he had slowed down and gotten some control, he has not peed the bed. Once in a while it will happen, and I lose it. There is no excuse for that! Bottom line, stopthetrain, all it is is a sure sign that there is an obvious problem.
Wow, I didn't realize this was a common issue. Mine would sleepwalk and pee in wrong places, but not very often. Glad I haven't had to deal with this problem like some others. The snoring was bad enough.
My AH only did it a few times. Ticked me off to no end. Just like Tambos' husband, mine passed out in his recliner and blamed it on spilling his beer. Funny thing is that before I went to bed I took the beer bottle out of his hand. LOL, don't get me started on the snoring!
Yes, my AH did the same thing when he was drinking. He would go in the closet, pee on an expensive rug, and it was really bad when we were out of town and he was unfamiliar with the room. I would hear him pee all over the place. He goes in the shower and pees and I go in and wake him up and of course, he screams at me. It was absolutely digusting! I pray I don't have to deal with that again, but I think it has to do with their brain being out of sorts due to the alcohol. Very sad....
Hi I am new to this group, and I was just reading some old postings. I am glad to find out that I am not the only one who has an AH with peeing/snoring problems. He peed on the carpet in a hotel room in Maui. He once opened a closet door and almost peed in our closet. I screamed to wake him up and had to drag the 6'3", 230lb guy to the bathroom. Our bed looks disgusting as mattress cover doesn't do any good with the amount of pee he does occasionally. Also he pees in his own pants so when he comes home from a bar, the front of his pants look wet all the time. Just writing this reply makes me embarrassed, but these are all TRUE.
My husband is what I would call an 'advanced alcoholic'. Just this week, he has gotten up twice in the night talking jibberish - once in our closet and once across our bedroom -- to go to the bathroom. I was able to stop him and direct him to the bathroom. Should I just have let him pee there and clean up his own mess?
OMG, soready, my AH is babbling on and on about the same things all the time. Repeating himself over and over on one subject for 20 minutes before switching on to the next subject to babble about. He just finished a lengthy ramble on why he'd never cheat on me. And I just heard this this same lengthy speech two days ago when he got drunk prior to taking me out for our anniversary dinner. (For some reason, this is a favorite subject in the early stages of his daily drunkenness... maybe it should make me suspicious.) But then again his favorite subject is himself. He likes to go on and on about things that make him sound good to himself. A little self-esteem issue?? (Sarcasm there!)
Anyway, what is his reaction the next morning?
He made a lame attempt to blame it on the dogs until I reminded him that the dogs were crated up. That was the only time that he had wet the bed. Too foul
Our poor dogs. They CAN hold it. My 9-year old dog with hip dysplasia can hold her urine, while crated up for 10 hours.
Pathetic that we even have to make this a topic of conversation but thankful that we have an arena to talk about it!
