Hi . i found this group after spending yet another night googling 'living with an alcoholic husband' I have been married for 10 years. My husband has always had excessive amounts of alcohol, but I was so blinded by love , I choose to overlook it. Now, here we are , 10 years later and it is worse than ever. Not only is he destroying himself, he is destroying me too. He had a period of about 18 months sober, when things were amazing. He started drinking again 6 months ago and it has progressed to being passed out drunk ,at least 2/3 times a week.In the back yard, In the neighbors front yard. In his car. On the floor - pretty much anywhere except bed. Last night he said goodnight to me, said he was going to shut off the lights and lock up .Next thing I know ,it's 5.30 AM and I am waking up and he's no-where to be found. Found him passed out under a bush in our back yard. I got him into the house where he proceeded to yell and call me names before passing out again on the floor. I texted his boss ,on his phone, saying couldn't come to work as back had gone out - so scared he is going to get fired for all the 'sick' days he takes. After a day where I am ,yet again, constantly close to tears, lost, confused, angry, hurt, betrayed and many more emotions, I came home and he was just getting up. He acted like nothing was wrong- just as he always does. I got mad and told him I can't live like this anymore. He comes back with the argument that he's not really 'that bad' and at least he's not hanging out at bars etc etc...he makes me feel like it's all in my head and it's perfect;y normal to sleep outside under bushes ( or last week on the neighbor's front lawn) He has no concept of the pain he is causing and more, doesn't seem to care. He'll be sober now until tomorrow and then it will start all over again. So many plans have been ruined. So many promises have been broken. I feel so alone and just at a loss of what to do. I do love him, Everyone who knows him thinks he is hilarious and a real 'character' when out having a drink with him. They don't witness all the nights he keeps me up all night, all the hateful and abusive things he says (and then denies having ever said) all the times I've had to clean him up after peeing himself etc etc etc...not to mention the fact that he's just not 'present' most of the time in our relationship .Most of our friends and family have no idea the extent of his alcoholism. I feel ashamed to admit to anyone that I am struggling to keep it together. His Father and Uncle both died early, as a direct result of alcoholism. I'm helpless watching him go down the same path and not able to stop him. He is very smart and intelligent and in his more lucid moments, he admits he has a problem, but says he has to[ figure out how to handle it [...
..Thank so much for reading this. I know it probably doesn't read too well - my thoughts are so scattered. I'm laying in bed with my laptop while he is in the living room, laughing his head off at some movie, just like life is wonderful and not a care in the world...I'm so lost...

But I'm now out on my own and I'm loving the quietness. And knowing
When I come home from work I just have to take care of me. I still talk to my husband
And he will call me at times to say he loves me and misses me.
In a crazy way I miss him too but then I think of our live together for the
Last 15 years and all I went through and I glad to say I'm alone.
You have a right to peace and no fear living too .
I pray you find that I know how this disease distroys you and then
It's a never ending life sucking job. Which we carry all the guilt and pain.
Many hugs and prayer
Your sister in pain
I don't really have any advice for you, but let me tell you that there is a way out that works for you. It might not work for others, but it will work for you. I am moving out of the apartment we share tomorrow. I have driven him to the ER too many times this year, including a week-long stay in the ICU. None of it left any impression, he relapsed again last week. I found an apartment, packed up my stuff, and tomorrow my friends are helping me move. I know this is the right way for me. It took me a while to get to this point, but let me assure you that you will find your way as well. Until then, stay strong.
Bless your heart hug and prayers
It's a difficult situation to be in.
(((hugs)))
Bonblue - you're a kind-hearted soul! I hope your husband is doing better. Hugs!
It bothers me at time to be around a constant negative person
Need lots of prayers and hugs
first and foremost, don't be ashamed. i was ashamed about my boyfriend's drinking - we're common law, together over two years with a little girl. his mother and sister knew about his drinking and did what they could but we all enabled. his father passed away earlier this year and everything went to sh*t. in the respect that we are in love with alcoholics, we are the same - which is essentially what matters.
you should tell your friends, your family, a therapist. don't be ashamed. i was ashamed, but the relief when i told my support group about what we are going through was immense.
i did the leg work and found a therapy program for him to help him sort out his disease. he has fought and lied and struggled for ages about getting help, begging us to help and then screaming at us and pushing us away. there are so many layers to deal with.
but you need a support group. you need to know that this isn't your fault, you didn't cause this, you can't help him. he has to help himself. he has to want it for himself. and even when he gets help it will still be hard. every day i'm stressed out and worried about what he's doing, where he is, who he will be when he comes home or wakes up in the morning. it's draining. but i'm hoping he will get through it. i'm holding out hope that he will be able to quit and we can be a family. i think i might be naive. but we have this little girl and i'm trying...
and sober. I told him I do love him very much, but I don't want it to end in hate. So now my goal is to not get mad everytime he drinks, I have to stop taking it as a personal attack on me, I know that it is not personal, but it sure does feel that way when they choose a bottle over their wife & family. Since I have a end date in mind, I just have to let him do his part because I have done mine beyond what any normal person would do. I agree, it's comforting knowing we are are not alone, but still saddening that so many of us have the same hurt ongoing. I pray that you will find your strength and do what makes you feel good, we all have to live in our own skin. Congrats on your dream job :) you got some good going on :) got to be thankful for that.
