My husband and I have been together for 17 years. More than half my life has been with him. He is handsome, funny, works hard and he drinks- a lot. He has always been a drinker, but this past year and half it is getting worse. He comes home from work and drinks as much beer as it takes to pass out. Most of the time he will go drink at his buddies... I think so he doesn't have to listen to me complain. He is an ass when he drinks, irresponsible and doesn't care about his family. The next he he apologies, tells me he loves me, that he can't live without me and he wants to change. (Same old story everyday) He doesn't have a stop button. He drinks 1 beer and then keeps going. He cannot stop. He is a functioning alcoholic. He still goes to work and gets a paycheck, but our family our kids come second. The amount of family days ruined by a hangover, or my anger from his behavior the night before is ruining our family. I am lost, I feel alone and I don't know what to do.
Ur not alone sweetie, it's a hard life living with an alcoholic and it takes someone strong to put up with it. Don't think I will ever understand. Hugs and prayers!
I completley understand how you feel. I haven't been with my husband that long and so with that being said would you advise I keep fighting or give up?
Bk31, it all depends on whether he knows he has a problem or not. And if he is truly willing to do all that it takes to quit.
MCM-I'm sorry that the addiction has ruined your idea of a family. It has totally ruined what I had wanted too. You have to get to a point of not engaging at all with him when he is drinking. Learn to practice detachment from the situation. You didn't cause the drinking and you cannot control it. Shift your focus away from how much he is drinking and that he is drunk, and focus on you and the kids instead. Let him live with the fact that he will miss out on so much of the kids life due to being drunk all the time and them growing up. Realize that you haven't missed out and don't give any more energy in focusing on what he is doing. He doesn't deserve the energy you waste on worrying about how he will act or how much he has drunk.
I really feel for you, your story sounds very similar to mine. With my partner for 13 years since I was 17. I'm a stay at home mum while he's a functioning alcoholic, that's gotten worse and worse and worse. No idea what to do other than leave now. Why should he get the nice days with us inbetween his drinking and treat us like shit when he feels like it :-( and lie, I can't stand the lying!!
I just had another rough night, didn't get any sleep because he was in the garage smoking cigarettes and drinking away. He said it was ok because he waited for me to fall asleep. WHAT!? He said he doesn't need this stress right now. He has been getting yelled at at work all week already and he just needs to relax. Seriously, so what the excuse all the other days when it hasn't been a bad week. Since when is getting drunk the right way to handle stress. So an 18 pack of Bud Light is gone in one night.
We are supposed to go on a family staycation tomorrow. I told him I don't want to go. He can take the kids and go by himself.
