How do you guys deal with the money wasted on alcohol? personally we are up to our eyeballs in debt because of his over spending and wanting an extravagant lifestyle, which he used to fund by the business he ran, now were not making as much money as he wanted to leave that line of work because it was causing him so much stress we actually thought it might help with the drinking and hes been setting up new businesses that he thinks he will enjoy. well leaving that line of work hasnt stopped the drinking and if anything its got worse, except now we dont have the money to fund this habit and we are falling behind with bills and find that we have to borrow money when it comes to the end of the month. he always gives me full control of the money even though he earns it because he knows he will blow it in one go. but that doesnt stop him ringing me asking me to transfer it to him whenever he needs it. Im so resentful that im in debt because of him and he's still spending money on drink like he does. its hundreds of pounds a week - which he earns, but he owes me, family and credit card debts.
My husband just changed jobs too with a pay cut, because his last job was too stressful. But that was because he wanted to drink and got too far behind on his work. Mind you that his job took our family on vacation trips to Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii, and he got to make his own hours. It was a great job, but I would watch him go months without doing ONE thing for it or making a phone call. Eventually it got to where he knew he would get fired because there was no salvaging how far he got behind and so he quit. He hasn't yet gotten a check from his new job which will be not even close to what we got before. So we will see how it goes. It makes it frustrating because I'd say lie about the money you have left but you don't want to stoop to his level . But I would say spend it on bills as soon as it gets to the bank account, that way you don't have to even worry about it. And if he asks or gives you any attitude about it, just tell him like you said on here. At least it would sit better with you knowing that bills are paid for and knowing that you are right to take all of the money and spend it on the right things instead of it being wasted on alcohol and not your family. He may get mad but who cares!? We're not supposed to be enabling them anyways and babying their every want when they certainly don't ours! Sorry sounds kind of harsh, I feel the frustration too while writing this out!
Our finances are completelying separate 50/50 for all costs. We have separate bank accounts as well. Even our date night is dutch. Sounds silly but it's what works for us. He would get so upset and want for go over finances all the time because he had no money. He would spend easily 600+ a month on alcohol and cigarettes. I always said to him, it's not my fault you choose to spend all your money on alcohol and cig when I choose to get a gym membership and gardening. He is sober now 11 months and got a truck and still has money left over! Goes to show you how much it cots, it's a boat load.
Protect yourself and separate all finances. Let him tarnish his credit and build debt. That way you protect yourself
CeeCee, you give me so much hope! We're at the point he gives me receipts for everything. I can see online how much he spends and where he spends it, but the receipts tell me what he is spending it for. If we have to go to 50/50 or something similar, we could do it. Right now, he's sober 3 weeks after a 2-week binge (I caught him). I hate that I have to check receipts, but it's working for now. He started on Antabuse, too, so hopefully he's hit his bottom. Anyway, I'm happy for you!
Be careful that there may be other addictions. About two years ago my husband would go out drinking and play those dumb machines...gambling and I never saw any real contribution to the bills bc of it. He confessed it to me last year and now we are separated bc I just couldn't deal w it anymore.
