I think I'm different from a lot of the people who post here. I've posted before but a little background. I'm 62 and my husband is an extremely high functioning alcoholic. We have four grown children and six grandchildren. Our life has been very good. I think it was about five years or so since I realized him drinking heavily, and then 3 years ago he was hospitalized with a BAC of 4.06, which I understand would kill most people. He quit for 2 weeks and then resumed. I finally confronted him a month ago, he tapered off for a week and then quit. Then a drink or two with his friends and now today he bought another bottle of gin. He has glaucoma and heart issues and is depressed so I can see where this is coming from. But I'm so afraid he's not going to live much longer. I love him very much and I'm not going to leave him but I think I'll live the rest of my life alone.
So, if you're younger and have small children, this is my advice to you. Please look realistically at what your life holds.
If you truly love him and can see him changing then try to support him. But the kids really come first. No one should have to go through this. Life should be a joy for the most part. It shouldn't be so hard. I really feel for all the young women out there who are going through this. It's not fair and it sucks. Please remember to take care of yourself and your children. No matter how much you love someone, you and the kids need to come first.
if there is anyone out there in my situation I would love to chat. I feel so alone most of the time.
I'm afraid of this exact situation. I ask myself all the time, do I want to be retired and still living like this? Do I want our kids to be around this for another 10 years? Don't the kids deserve better? Don't *I* deserve better? But why is it so hard to leave? It's supposed to be for better or worse, right? Well, I've been through the worse, when does the better start?
I'm so sorry for you, and pray that you will be blessed richly. You deserve a life filled with joy, not sorrow. Sending hugs.
