I've been in my relationship since I was 18. My husband is an alcoholic as were his parents and grandparents. Red flag right!
Now I'm 40 and I promised myself I would be free of this negative environment and can't get enough courage to leave.
My mom has watched for years, trying to help me but I'm scared. She told me plan recently to have me involuntarily commit him to rehab. Then file for divorce.
I guess I don't want to cuz I don't want to betray him. I also don't want him to be homeless either. He has no family left. That had always been a manipulative sting he has pulled.
I don't want to live with him anymore, but have no money to leave. I want to keep our house cuz of my daughter and it's affordable.
I've tried to call help lines only to hang up when someone came on. So I thought I'd try a chat room.
Does anyone have any words of encouragement? Can anyone give me hope?
Do you have any children with this man? If not then dont waste your money on rehab, in my personal experience you'll go through many attempts at rehab before it actually works if it ever works. In & out of rehab throughout the years. Unless he voluntarily signs himself up to get help I dont think those places help. It's just a stalling block for them to get better so they can drink again when it's gotten too bad. I would leave as soon as you can..I know its easier said than done..i still haven't left and have been trying to do so for a year now. You're still young enough to find true love again and you deserve it. I wish someone told me this in the early stages of alcoholism...that or will never get better. In the world of alcoholism when you take a step forward you take 2 steps back..its like a continuous circle of disappointment.
Yes I have one daughter who is waiting for me to get my shit together. She's 11...
I love your response cuz I feel the same way. I think my mom wants me use rehab as an opportunity to divorce him.
I don't know I just desire to be thru with it all and go on with life.
Been in my alcohol marriage for 32 yrs. same as u been with this man my entire adult life! Never knew about this illness till a few years after we married. His father was an alcoholic and his mom dealt with it till he died. I always thought I stayed for my kids to have a better life since he’s a functional alcoholic and has always provided well. Truth is Im seeing now that I had and still have a problem with giving up! Always thought tomorrow would be better... everyone around me seen what I couldn’t see, the truth that he didn’t want to quiet help if he did he would have! It’s so hard for me to put him out of the home that he’s put so much into I would leave but now I have grandchildren that I’ve taken on to raise with him and can’t afford to support them on my own and feel guilty of making him support them even though he adopted with me and wanted to these girls aren’t his blood. So he doesn’t owe me! But why should we have to give up our home when we dont have the problem. It’s a hard life and it’s even harder to move on! Ur young if your going to do this don’t waste anymore time. I remember 10 yrs ago my children telling me to go and I couldn’t they seen what I couldn’t. Now I see and if it were just me I could survive so the attitude I have now is life goes fast if I can’t now we only have 5 yrs and they will be of age and my time will be here. Only u can make the choice just remember if he hasn’t changed he most likely won’t unless he chooses to! Good luck to u and ur daughter
