I haven't posted on here for a while, just kind of embarrassed of what's going on in my life, I guess.
My ABF has been basically putting our relationship on the back burner for the past month and a half while he puts most of his effort into his relationship with a female friend from high school. They text constantly. She lives thousands of miles away and although he did go to see her last weekend and I was worried that something would happen between them, I actually don't think anything did. I think he just likes talking to her because she'll listen no matter what and doesn't judge him, while I have basically avoided contact with him when he's drunk as much as possible.
But whatever happened when he was there is beside the point. He's been putting little effort into our relationship. He's been having a rough time at work, hates his job, he's mixed race and people in our area are racist. He's been depressed the entire time we've been together. But he wants to try to figure things out while he's on this trip. But he comes back more depressed than ever and said he's upset he didn't figure anything out. How would he do that when he was drunk the entire time?
I had a talk with him when he got back about boundaries and respecting me and showing me that he cares with his actions.
Now we're at his parents for Thanksgiving and he drank last night and stared drinking first thing this morning. Now we're going out to lunch with them and I'm going to have to make sure he doesn't start any political fights or arguments about religion. And then I'll have to deal with whatever drunk drama or depressed rants he goes on for the rest of the day.
I still love him so much and I feel for him that he can't stand to face life without drinking but I think it's time to leave. I just don't know how to do it. We've been together for three years and live together and I don't have much money or any friends or family in the area.
I know you love him, but you also deserve to be loved- really loved in return. And most of the time loving an alcoholic does not " fix" them. My AH used my love for him as a manipulative tool against me! My advise to you is to spend some serious time deciding if this struggle is REALLY the life you want. If I could live my life over again, I would probably leave!!!! Good luck to you.
No amount of love we can give someone, is going to save them. It can help them if they are on a journey to healing and self-love. If they don't or won't love themselves, they aren't going to really be able to love anyone else.
I'm not so sure I'd still be my relationship with my AH if I had a foreshadowing of our future earlier on in our relationship. My husband was my HS sweetie, so he kind of grew into this addiction in the 20 years we've been together. This is a battle you'll constantly have to wage indefinitely. If you think you can stick it out for the long haul and know there will be worse times ahead, if you understand he'll never be "cured" from this, then maybe you have the strength to stay. But my guess is since we're here together in this group, that maybe you've already glimpsed into the future and don't love what you see. This will become part of YOUR identity. Part of YOUR journey. Made even more tumultuous once you're a homeowner, wife and parent and things can't be so easily divided. Take it from someone whose life is so intertwined with an addict that separation seems an impossible feat... love yourself first. Loving someone else isn't enough sometimes. Talk to your family and friends. I'm sure they would come to your aid of they understood the enormity of your situation. Hugs to you!
The only thing I learned that has helped in Alanon is the three C's: you can't change, cure, or control and alcoholic and their addiction. It is just impossible.
The only thing you can do is seek help for yourself and try talk with him about his addiction. I was upfront with my husband. His alcohol problem wasn't ever talked about for a long time but finally in stared of bring it up and how it was affecting myself and the kids and how I was unhappy. I finally started to collect myself and was ready to.leave when he finally got help. We have to decide when we have had enough and move.on.or keep fighting. Personally I am burned out. My hubby doesn't get any more.wiggle room. Any more mess ups it is done. I'm am out. Period. He knows where I stand.
Try talking with him.and.let him know where you stand
At the end of summer we had that talk about divorce. It got pretty ugly for awhile. He showed me his true side and things came out that broke any trust I would have left for him. October we have been married 17 years and in my heart it is over. He knows that I am done and now we are just cohabitating. He still drinks but I don't let it bother me anymore. He tries to show me that he is changing, but that doesn't matter either. I am at such a point that I just focus on the boys and I. That is enough for me to deal with, and how I am going to make money for when he is gone some day.
