Wives of Alcoholics Community Group
A forum of healing and help for wives of alcoholics.
Hello all, I am another newcomer to this group. I was just wondering, does anyone have any success stories they can share? For instance, has anyone ever had a husband successfully get and stay sober, or has there ever been anything anyone has said or done that seemed to get their man to wisen up? Or is it futile for me to have hope?
I have been with my functioning alcoholic husband for ten years now. The first few years he was just fun. But steadily over the years I have watched as he's become more angry and irrational when he drinks. He is functioning now, but I'm worried it won't be that way much longer. He is also starting to push friends away, and his long time job told him to stay home the other day. The biggest problem is how emotional and mean he becomes. And then when I call him out on it he tries to blame me and say I started it. I know in my heart I didn't, but sometimes I question myself. Are there maybe things I say or do that I could improve on or ways I communicate that could make the situation better? (I don't drink at all btw, and haven't since long before I met him). There have been a few times he's admitted to needing to stop, and even twice he did for a couple of months at a time. But there are more times that he refuses to quit and doesn't seem to think he has a problem.
I am pulled over on the side of a highway crying as I write this, I just feel so sad and hopeless. I don't want to turn my back on the person I love if there's any way my support could help him get over the root problems that drive him to drink. But at the same time, it is starting to really affect my life, my work, my health, and my friendships. I don't want to wake up 30 years from now and think back on how I should not have wasted my time. But I'm also not sure where or when to draw the line. Thank you for any advice you can offer! And my condolences for every person in this group!
