Things have been somewhat calm the last few weeks. But I know better than to get comfortable. Tonight AH had a friend over watching sports. They were drinking of course, but that's nothing new. I smiled at something on my phone. Who could guess the change of events that would follow? So he asked me what I was smiling about. I tried to explain a funny picture. His response 'well you rarely ever smile'. It dripped sarcasm. So instead of rising to the bait, I walked out of the room. He blew up! Screaming and yelling saying to his friend 'see what I put up with?' Then he starts insisting I called him names. And he believes himself. I swear he has brain damage, I said nothing. Then he starts yelling at my son. He let him borrow money earlier. He's yelling that he wants it back right now or else. He only gave it to him an hour ago and it was spent. Finally after about 45 minutes of verbal abuse and screaming at me, in front of his friend, I handed him the money and he left. He threatened that he's not coming back. I couldn't get that lucky. He came back for more of course with no money. I'm actually glad his friend witnessed this. As embarrassing as it was, he now knows what I live with. And just maybe I'm not the witch AH portrays me as.
Wow, that's awful - you must have been shell-shocked! So sorry you had to deal with that, but as you said maybe it was good that his friend witnessed his terrible behavior toward you and your son.
Oh Cadeer, I'm so sorry for your night and how he treated you. And yes, now his friend does know the truth. You never know, maybe this friend will suggest he get help. Our AH's will take someone else's advise much more readily than ours.
There is this fear that we've been portrayed wrongly to everyone by our AH's. Well, yours just did you a round-about favor. Really good for you for not taking his bait. I feel really badly for your son, too. This is just so unfair.

Oh Cadeer - I'm so sorry that this happened to you. I too am realizing that everything about an AH is so unpredictable and irrational. I''m always on alert in what I say or do, but that still doesn't help....hopefully his friend will talk to him or maybe start mentioning this issue to other friends so that at some point someone will make a comment about his behavior. You did well in not responding... I need to try and do the same.
Ladies, I don't even have words for the support and comfort this group provides. Thank you so much for your comments. Things have calmed down this morning, he acts like nothing happened. He probably doesn't even remember it. I just didn't have the strength to bring it back up and rehash it. The ugly words that come out of his mouth still astound me after 22 years, but he no longer has the power to hurt me with them. And you are all right, his friend hearing this exchange was a blessing in disguise. He actually told me he was afraid during this, my reply was 'welcome to my life, this is nothing unusual for him'. Here's hoping he's gotten it out of his system for a few days. Hope you all have a wonderful, drama free day.
Cadeer, I am so sorry you are going through this. I came back to DS today (been away a few years)...because I desperately need support, encouragement, perspective, a place to vent, and listen to others dealing with my same situation. I am feeling broken and scared and overwhelmed today myself. I can't even talk about it right now, but your words on this site so far just resonate with me repeatedly. Sending you warm hugs and prayers. I think this place is exactly where I need to be right now. <3 blessings
