My husband and I have been together for the last 14 yrs. He drank a bit when we first met, but so did 90% of the guys in the small city we live in. I noticed the drinking became heavier and heavier. We have 2 children and I worry about the environment they are in. He isnt physical at all and when he's drunk he can make rude remarks, without meaning them, but it is the falling down, passing out by 9 that isnt ok. I love him and he is one of my best friends, but I fear he wont change. I have talked, cried, screamed and begged. I dont know what to do know except throw him out for a few months and show him I mean business. I'm i being too harsh? I cant talk to anyone, because they have no clue what it is like.
i too am in a small town - it is more common than not to start the day with a few beers. drink a 12 pack by lunch. keep drinking through the day and evening. food is a secondary thought since the belief that 'each can of beer is a loaf of bread'.
i am happy that your spouse is not physically abusive! there is still the verbal abuse. do your children see this? can they comprehend what is happening?
the high functioning alcoholics are statistically the most difficult to talk with since in their mind they do not have a problem.
the only thing you can do is what is best for you and your children. setting boundaries and sticking to them.
is there a nearby support group you can send an email to for advice?
