Widows & Widowers Support Group
This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.
I have been doing a little study on the value of suffering and I found one of the comments from this author to be interesting. He said that today we define the word happy to mean feeling good but in the past the great philosophers defined happiness as the capacity to DO good. So, for me, I can find peace when I am doing something that is good even if my feelings don't seem all that cheery.
I agree with you all.......especially truhal and edithbath and iris and and Darlene and all.
My husband used to say "a man's got to do what a man's got to do."
I am learning that what I've got to do at this time in life is mostly to put my head down and keep going. It really is a journey and there will be some nice times but most of the trip requires perseverance and commitment.
I also try to be grateful because I am learning that
Gratitude is Strength
My rings stay on.

I lost my husband over 4 1/2 yrs ago. Been in a new relationship for close to 3 years now and I would never say that I have moved on. I have taken steps to make my life as happy as it can be without my husband, but he is still with me everyday. Not 1 day goes by I don't still think about him and miss him.
It sounds like you are making yourself as happy as you can. Don't let others interfere with the that.

So I have known since I was a little kid that "moving on" meant dumping someone and leaving them behind because you were pissed off at them for doing you wrong. That sure has nothing to do with my being a widow.
I agree with Maggie that another man will not fix anything. Love is never supposed to be about fixing people, is it? Unfortunately, friends and others will think you should be 'fixed' as though grief is something wrong because it makes you feel so crappy, and not the life of the party you may once have been. That's their problem, not yours. I agree that it is disrespectful, and I find that sort of thing very annoying.
The next time some idiot tells you that you need to 'move on', send them Ray Charles and ask them if they really think that's what's going on. You became a widow, you did not enter the Witness Protection Program. You don't have to erase your life story, your history, your feelings, for someone else's convenience.
Live your life as you see fit, just keep living it. There's nothing wrong with you. And it's ridiculous that they would try to minimize and dismiss the incredible amount of stuff you have accomplished and endured these past 3 years. Give yourself some credit and ignore the turkeys!

I think its a phrase that is said because others just do not want to know we are not happy as they would like us to be. SO we say oh we are fine. Which is a phrase in itself to serve its purpose however sometimes meaningless.
BUT we do survive doing what needs to be done to do so...Like fixing that broken pipe again....
