Good for you! I have learned to do a lot of things in the past year. I even hung a mirror on the bathroom door. And its perfect! I also learned to change the weedeater line.

Good for you figuring it out!! We can be very creative when we have to!! Now that we don't have our husband, we just have to figure things out!! I had an electrical storm take out my garage door opener in a pouring rain storm. On my way home I was missing Bob so bad! Then I got home and discovered the door wasn't working!! I had to walk around the house to the back door, and I got soaked! After a good cry, I opened the door manually and put the car in the garage. I found out that it just tripped the fuse. When I tried to reconnect the door so it would work again, I couldn't figure it out! After another cry, I googled it! I got a video clip that showed me exactly how to reconnect it!! We can do this girl!!

Good girl!!! I haven't really attempted any major things yet. I do have to clean out the garage that is mostly full of his stuff. I keep putting it off as none of the things in there are mine and I don't want to deal with it. You make me proud that you have done something. I know now I have to make attempts........Next the closet.....

I have been unable to attempt the garage Rosie. Shane spent a lot of time there, and most everything in there is "his" stuff. I have gone in there... but if I am in there for more than a few minutes I break down. And I hate moving his stuff. He never liked anyone moving his things out there.

And the entire time I was working to open my daughter's door.... there was a leopard spotted gecko giving me the evil eye. I am NOT a fan of critters like that. I am absolutely phobic of snakes... and this little thing is essentially a snake with legs. My daughter's room is upstairs and he is in an aquarium in the hall near her door. I do not go upstairs... it has been difficult since my surgery in early February (plate and screws in my leg) and just over a year prior to that surgery I had broken the other ankle (talus bone) and it collapsed shortly after. So typically... I never have to see that darn lizard. Tonight I had to, and my daughter seemed to be amused at my squeals and freak outs when it kept looking at me.

I will let you in on a secret :)

Kudos for getting your daughter rescued! Locks are aggravating - I discovered that when I had to replace one after Cliff died. Like you, I always depended on Cliff as he was the handy one with all the tools. And then when he died, everything broke, and I tried to fix things with his gigantic big man-sized tools. That didn't work! I started putting together my own tools - girl-sized stuff I could actually handle. It was also a lot less emotional than trying to use Cliff's tools, so I understand about not wanting to be in the garage going through your husband's stuff. I left my tools behind for my sisters when I moved to England, and have set-up my new tools here the same way.

I can now do a lot of things I never would have even attempted before - within reason of course. If I get stuck, I Google it or find a Youtube video for it. The home improvement stores often have their own videos online, so check Home Depot in the US or B&Q in the UK for how-to videos. Sometimes the videos help me decide whether I want to have a go at it or I really need to call in a professional.

One thing that has taken some effort is me trying to train my sons on the things their Dad didn't show them (and they didn't learn in shop class or whatever). It's hard because my older son has essential tremor in his hands, so any fine work is almost impossible, but some of the basic stuff he can handle. The younger one is better with his hands, so he is my build-it-yourself helper, and we have put together a number of cabinets and bookcases and such. I think Cliff would be proud of how well we have managed it.

It will get easier, and you are growing stronger.

Good job on rescuing your daugher. And surviving the snake type thing. My husband was not the fix it kinda guy. He didn't like housework either ha ha. I have found though that if I don't cook, I don't have to do dishes. I have a brand new dishwasher, still in the box. Started replacing my kitchen floor before this last round of appt's etc with my husband. Still no gumption to finish anything. I just bought a new hand saw yesterday as the old one was so dull it wouldn't cut through all the volunteer trees that have grown. Over the years I have accumulated quite a few tools. Just wish I could find them when I need them. Not comfortable with anything electrical though. It scares me. Wouldn't you know I have three light fixtures that quit recently. So, I am in the process of gathering stuff to fix or replace them too. I do know where the breaker box is in the basement so I will be sure to be careful. I have a brother that's an electrician, so why wouldn't I call him? Who knows, guess I don't want him to see my dirty house. ha ha, So more crap to add to my list of shit to do. Kudos , people don't realize the battles we take on . My brother always says "Why did you not call me?" and I say, I had a session of frustrating , annoying, maddening , cursing events but in the end , I did it all by myself...I pick my battles and know when it's time to call for help but I am always afraid to impose. Thankful for you tube as I am learning a lot of things so that I can do it by myself.
To finally get it done with that beast looking at you and causing extra pressure is awesome!
I probably would have told my dd that she was on her own lol
I may have given her a flat screw driver and told her to take the pins out of the door frame and take out the entire door before having to be under the scrutiny of the beast in the aquarium .:)

For Birthdays or Christmas I asked for a skil saw, electric drill, wheelbarrow, new tool to change tire, and more...

Certain tools of his were too big for me and many very old I feel safer with the new ones NOW to saw down a tree that is growing too fast in the wrong place

And ~3 yrs to clean his garage (looking for what was there or not) I am going to find him and kick his B^%$# IT WAS a mess and took ~2 years

Shane's garage is a nightmare.... He had sooooo much STUFF. You have to climb over things to get to almost anything. But he knew where EVERYTHING was... it was mind boggling. The main toolbox is right by the little door... that is pretty much as far as I go...
