Over and over, I've heard the phrase "the grief comes in waves". I've found that to be very true. While walking along the beach this morning, I was thinking about the "waves of grief".
When we first experience loss, the waves of grief hit us hard, knock us down. We are overcome by these waves, dragged under, almost suffocated. As time goes on, we learn to ride the waves of grief, we learn how to go along with them, or duck under them. The waves never stop, we just learn how to avoid getting knocked down and pulled under. Once in a while, after we think we've mastered riding the waves, a rogue wave hits us hard, down we go, dragged in the undertow. But we find our way to the surface once again.
I have found this is how it has been with me. I have accepted that there will always be waves, and that once in a while one will knock me down...but I will be able to get up and endure.
