My husband passed in 2011. His daughter from his first marriage, M, just had a baby in November. I helped raise her from the time she was four years old. I am thrilled, but at the same time, sad and confused. M's mother is there for her, and the baby has four grandparents on the dad's side. I don't know where I fit into this baby's life or what my role is. Without my husband there, I don't know why I am included in family gatherings. Everyone is very kind to me and includes me, but I'm feeling deep sadness as well as joy. No one else feels that sadness. I'm tired of grief casting a shadow on all my life events! I'm tired of always being the "sad girl."

I understand it is hard always feeling like "the sad one" at gatherings.
However, it is better than being treated as if you do not belong "where you thought you had before, and therefore always would".
Family are those who love & welcome you. All your years of caring for her are being recognized as being important, and you are family.
Sometimes in grief we feel that we fit NOWHERE. even closest blood family.
I encourage you to go and enjoy that new little baby, continue to have a relationship with your step daughter, and don't worry about labeling it or defining the relationship. Just love each other!
