this happened to me and I am amazed how the little things bring about such deep emotions ..... another reminder that grief has no ending ....for when things like this continue to occur I am brought back to the the end in deep sorrow, it doesn't last but the pain in still sharp .....

and I believe I will have these moments the rest of my living days ...

I have many snippets of Vern's handwriting, but the real treasure trove is the shoebox full of the letters we wrote back and forth while he was courting me! Your beautiful post has reminded me that someday I must revisit those letters and remember the better times when we were young and fresh and just starting on our long journey. I have a memorial tattoo on my left shoulder/back. I took a copy of my husband signature which the tattoo artist reproduced on my back. It looks like my husband signed it himself...I do stop in reflection when I run across something he wrote or a card he sent. It is so personal.

I also have sticky notes, cards, scratch paper----with little and long messages from Stan. At probably 3 months I was already having a tearful day anyway so I sorted my cards to him, his cards to me and things my kids had written to their dad into storage containers. I have mine to Stan and visa versa in the other nightstand drawers to go through when I want----so far that has been too hard----but comforting to know they are there. I also believe I will have these moments of tears and emotions for the rest of my living days----I know it will be better, but always present and I'm good with that.

Inside one of the kitchen cabinets there is a click. Don would write notes and click them there for me to see when I got home from work. He just left the cabinet door open. The last note he wrote to me before he was diagnosed in May is still there. It say, "Babe, went to the gym. L & K Me" It will stay on that click as long as I am here.... Vicki

Seeing the handwritten notes and cards has been difficult. I had to take over the business he had been runing for about 20+ yrs. Coming in there and taking over his desk and every single document has his writing on it, very hard.

One of the most precious pieces of paper I found is the note I wrote to him before we got married. He carried it folded in his wallet all these years. It remains there just as it has always been.

Oh Lininsocal, the tattoo of your husbands signature is a wonderful idea, I am going to steal your idea and do the same thing. Thank you for an excellent idea. I hope your sorrow is lessened a little knowing you helped someone.

Now (28 months later) when I see his signature or something he wrote...I can smile knowing he is still with me.

I have come across my husbands handwriting. Also his doodles of things he planned to make in his shop. Right after he passed away my son Dillon found his hand print where he had changed oil. He took a picture of it and framed it. Has it on the wall in his room. It is so weird how the littlest of things mean so much now that they are gone.

We met where he worked and he gave me his business card with his name on it that day and I keep that in my wallet where I can always see it. I also keep two notes with his handwriting in my wallet. And when I open my cell phone, his picture is the first thing I see. It helps and when I see those things, it makes me feel like he is with me and encouraging me.

Cliff was a prolific writer, scribbler, poet, doodler, composer, you-name-it. Going through our things included going through dozens of notepads to pull out anything that might be worth saving or important. Some of it made me laugh, some of it made me cry, and some was so mysterious that none of us could decipher it! He was so funny about his handwriting, and he taught himself calligraphy, too. His handwriting was so distinctive. I kept some things, some things I photographed before I got rid of them. It does still knock me for a loop when I see his handwriting, and I guess it will always remind me of another time, another life.

I found a post-it note on my wife's desk that just said:

Call [Name of Friend] with a phone number.

(The friend's name is very distinctive, so I don't want to actually say it here on a public forum.)

The person named was an old friend of both of ours who we had known since high school, about 37 years ago. So I decided to interpret it as a suggestion to call. I'm so glad I did, our friend has been very helpful and supportive and willing to listen throughout this ordeal. I think I'm going to have the post-it framed and keep it as a permanent reminder to call regularly.

Unbelievably, I read this post last night and my gut kind of wrenched at the thought of seeing Jims writing. I put everything laying around the house with his writing on it away in a box shortly after he died. Somehow seeing his writing was so painful, his putting his thoughts, reminders etc on papera list he will never complete. Then today I went to work and was cleaning out my office(I took a new job) I pulled some papers out of a satchel to sort through.and an envelope dropped on my desk.It took my breath away. There was Jims hand writing all over the envelope. He obviously was shopping for tires as he had written tires sizes, tire store numbers etc..and with that his precious little doodles he did while he was listening on the phone What a shock.
