Hi everybody. This has been a really emotional, difficult week. I was partnered to the love of my life, Michael, for over 30 yrs until his passing from cancer in 2009. As with most of us, I was just utterly devastated and lost for many yrs after his funeral, and still continue to be in many ways. The learning how to move on and create a new life, all the million details of the day you now have to figure out and do on your own. It's been so jaw dropping difficult for me. Well. When I came out of the closet at 16 to my parents, sadly they weren't as supportive as I had hoped, and we were estranged for over 30 yrs. no matter how hard I tried to fix things, forgive and move on, it was no hope from my parents side. Luckily, I fell in love with mikes family, and still remain close to them. (As a side note, my father developed Alzheimer's in 07 and now my mother and I have reunited and I have moved her in with me, and care for her daily, while we get reacquainted). Also, 2 yrs ago, I fell in love with a new boyfriend, who is a very sweet, kind caring man and we have been living together for the past 18 months. Well, things haven't been feeling right between new boyfriend and I lately, so I decided to talk with him about this, and sadly through our conversation I discovered that my feelings for him are much deeper for him, than his for me. He loves me, loves our relationship, he doesn't understand why I'm so upset, but, I realize he is not "IN LOVE" with me. We have a wonderful time together, are like best friends, laugh, really enjoy each other, but sadly, my feelings have gone way deeper for him, that he can't return. It hurts, I now realize the sadness I have felt, the loneliness I have felt greatly at times, has not been the grief over my Michael, but the grief over the fact that Chris is just going to be a friend. It hit me like a ton of bricks last night, and I'm just devastated. I have been blaming myself over the past 18 months, feeling so guilty for still not being over Mike, feeling like I'm letting Chris down, by not letting go of Mike, but in reality, I've been so sad, lonely, because this new man I have fallen for isn't the right one for me, and my heart has known it from the beginning. I'm so hurt and devastated. I don't know how to tell him we have to break up, it will really hurt him, and I now know I am going to have to face life alone again. Also, today I got a phone call from Adrienne, Michaels mother. She just found out yesterday she has stage 4 cancer, and there is no treatment. Adrienne was more of a mother to me from the age of 16 than my real mother ever was, and I love her so much, can't picture my life without her. She has been so wonderful in my healing as much as I have over Michael. I am a smart man, I feel so foolish to have allowed myself to think that this wonderful friendship I have with Chris was more than it was, there were signs all along the way, that I ignored, but i think another piece of the shock of Mikes passing is slowly wearing off, and I'm realizing over the past month, that I'm still more sad than I should be, and I'm finally facing some more feelings I have been hiding from. Oh this journey! It's a tough one.
You sound like a wonderful guy and certainly deserve to have someone devoted to you in your life.
I give you so much credit for taking your mother in and for caring for her. She's very lucky to have you.
Anyone would be proud to have a devoted and loving son such as you.

First, it's okay that you threw caution to the wind w/ Chris. Doesn't make him a bad person, nor you stupid. You did the best you could given your current situation. No guilt, and no regrets.
So now you realize that perhaps you put too many eggs in one basket. Doesn't matter. You are a "survivor" and once again, did the best you could to muster getting on with life.
As for Adrienne . . another Mother to you, recently diagnosed with cancer? Wow, simply another wrench in the healing process. I'm so sorry for her diagnosis. However, keep in mind that there are many cancer survivors out there.
Yes, you are a smart man . . and as such, please take a deep breath and focus on "self" for a moment. You are allowed to take a step or two back to reflect on your past and contemplate the future. Again, no guilt allowed in this process!
Allow room for grief . . allow room for tears (they are healing). Be with self and know that NO ONE is going to ever love you like you!! Many would argue with me on this, but it's my experience. We are born alone in many ways, and die alone. Yeah, we can all try to get it . . but do we really?
Yes, the journey is tough, but you must master the ship of your life and the direction it is going!! I know you can do it . . we all can. Best wishes and sending lots of positive thoughts your way. xo, D
