I just had a thought. Some of our group are very hilarious and can come up with some VERY funny thoughts. When someone asks how we are, to diffuse the atmosphere of the moment, what would a funny response be? Laughter always clears the air.
I'll start with one response, not terrifically funny, but at least to get the ball rolling. "I'm good as a hot air balloon with cold air inside. How 'bout you?"

Since I've figured out no one in the outside world wants to here more than, (great, ok, fine, etc etc etc), my new response is...
"Thanks for asking, but it would probably be better if you just said, I'm keeping you in my thoughts or I'm keeping you in my prayers."
Not funny... but some days I really get tired of trying to please others.
