I think that would be a very interesting job. Do you have any idea what kind of schooling or training is involved? I have my Paralegal degree & still would like to use it again. I just retired early from my credit union. Prior to that I did legal work and would like to return to that parttime.

What a wonderful job to consider. During the last two years, DH had a "case manager", which is similar to a patient advocate. She was absolutely wonderful and took care of a lot of things that I would have had to try to figure out on my own. She arranged for med equipment, was my liaison with PCP, so many things. She was absolutely invaluable. I do believe, though, that in most cases, they are people that have some type of nursing degrees and/or require certification. To find out more about Patient Advocates, there's a professional association called National Association For Healthcare Advocacy Consultants: http://www.nahac.memberlodge.com/. A "pure" Patient Advocate is not affiliated with an insurance company, hospital (i.e., "hospitalist) or other health care facility because this means their foremost interest is watchdog for their employer. That's does sound good. Advocates are needed more than ever as many families have no time or know how to find resources to watch out for the best interest of patients. It was a learning experience for me on several occasions, both parents but especially during Rob's brain cancer journey. There are only a few options for treatment, they are not main stream, Drs. don't often advice so it's push, research, push, watch meds, etc. You have to have time and computer knowledge to research treatments, where to go, etc. Yes a good, worthwhile, career I'd say. Not sure how you'd do it either but google and see what comes up. Donna

The hospital I worked at had only one patient advocate for the whole hospital - so it could be a difficult job to get. The patient advocate was someone I'd known for years - who had been a social worker in the hospital for 15 years so he was well aware of hospital problems.

I am aware that the Veterans Administration has patient advocates. That would be a great way to serve the country as well. So many my age are returning to civilian lives; having made the choice not to remail in service, or having disabling injuries. They need help. You might look into this. Peace on your journey, Kaaren
