I don't know how that works. I get SS for each of my five kids and an additional amount for me as well as I have a newborn at home. I own my own realty company and I do not have a limit on what I can make as do those that get benefits based on retirement age.

Check out the SS website. There are answers to just about every question you can think of.

You need advice from the SSI office. Find that one nice person there who maybe also lost someone close. I know there is a tendency to help one of our own, and you need a kind word with the advice. You may be able to claim part of your house for your business, depreciate your industrial sewing machine, and lots of other write offs with your own little business....and see if you can get some accounting advice from a trusted friend or friend of a friend.. makiing $1080 may not mean make only $1080, but keep $1080.

My partner was sick for 3 years...and the money always showed up, maybe not quite on time, but we kept our house, the kids, and the pets.

I would try to find something part time. Your business idea sounds very good, and working part time would give you a chance to develop that. I think that if you ''go over'' the Social Security limit, they take a small amount out - you can make up to $14,000 - or at least that's what they told me. If you are collecting your husband's SS, by working, you would be building up yours, when you go to collect They will tell you how much you will get. This is a hard spot granted, but if you have a niche for a business, which it sounds like you do - go for it. Good luck. It's scary to only have one income. I would try to advertise in ''horse'' magazines which you can find online. GOOD LUCK !!!!

Come to Florida! They don't pay anyone for anything!!!! Sorry for the joke, but I have to laugh or I'll cry. I'm 62, and had a career and worked all my life. I have a pension, but it's scary being alone. Now was the time we were going to retire and enjoy. My husband always had two jobs, and built our investments. He never got to retire or enjoy. Sorry - I'm having a pity party today. I have chocolate for tonight - that's what I'm looking forward to.

I work in a school and there are several substitute teachers who have informed the school exactly how much they can make to continue with social security. I would not feel funny at all about telling that to an employer - plenty of people are doing it today and employers understand.

Try a commissioned sales position. I'm not being funny, but times are tough. Believe me, it's easy not to earn over a certain amount in some areas. I know a man who sales church bulletin services. He can barely make it on that salary. If he had a SS check, he'd be okay.

with my husband's SS, for every $3.00 (if I remember correctly) you make over the SS limit, on your income tax return you end up losing a $1.00, by that I mean you have to claim it as income so it is taxed: between his SS, his pension and my money we made too much and always ended up having to claim 2/3 of his SS as taxable income on IRS return. SS tells you when you retire that there is no limit on the money you can make, true there's not, you just have to claim SS as taxable income also. The only other thing I've checked out is being his widow but too young to draw without forfeiting a percentage, and what I read at the moment is almost 40%...so if hubby was getting $1000.00 per month you take the $1000.00 X .60= $600.00, so you have to forfeit $400.00. Being almost 40% is almost 50% and he had to give up something like 20% when he retired at 62 so if you add that in with the 39.9% it comes out you give up 59.9% of what you would have got if you waited until 65....so I've come to the conclusion the longer I can wait, the less I will forfeit...but not sure if I can wait...

If you make over that amount you report it to SS and they adjust. Is that 1080 a month? I can make 14,000 a year while collecting SS and will get a part time job as soon as I find one to supliment the amount it cost me for medical.
For those who are collecting SS for children the rules are different.

I believe what they're telling you is that if you make over that amount you will have to pay back $1 for every $2 you earn. It's not that you aren't allowed to earn more just that you will have to repay 50% of the excess. In regard to part of it being taxable, if you're single you can have what's called a modified adjusted gross income up to $25,000 without Soc Sec becoming taxable. They take half of all your Soc Sec + your other taxable gross income less certain adjustments. If all the is under $25,000, none of the Soc Sec is taxable.
