My dearest friend in my whole life died today. She was 94 and had all of her mental abilities with her to the very end. Ever since I was a young adult just out of college, she was my mentor and friend. She was with me through every crisis and disaster of my life. She died not from any disease but just from a worn out body.
She died about 2 hours after I left her room at the hospital. This morning as I drove to see her in the hospital I prayed to God that he would stop her suffering today and take her to heaven. While holding her hand gently, I spoke softly to her that her suffering was coming to an end, that Jesus was coming soon to take her to heaven. I told her it wouldn't be long.
Today was the 18th of the month. My Joe died on the 18th of another month. This morning I asked God to let her die today. I didn't think her body was quite ready to give up, but God answered by prayer.
My husband Joe and my dearest friend today were my closest confidants and best friends. Now they are both gone. I am losing everyone it seems. I have no one to go to now, to talk things over with like I always did with my friend. It will be hard to go on without her.

I, too, lost my dearest friend 2 years ago, who was 15 years older than I and we had been friends for 18 years. She accepted me unconditionally - knew EVERYTHING about me and never made any judgments. Part of my life went with her. I did get to visit with her several times before she died (of lung cancer), however. So, I feel that I was able to find closure. Sounds like you have, as well.
Life seems to get crueler as we age, doesn't it? Guess that's just the cycle of life. Whoever coined the phrase (and I'm actually paraphrasing, here) "Getting old isn't for sissies" certainly phrased it well!
I'm learning to expand my circle of friends, however, and have made several on this site. I just know that some will be with me for the rest of my life and that is very encouraging.
You seem to be on the right track. With your positive attitude, you will add to your friendships. Just keep on truckin'. :)

Sorry for your loss, prayers are with you. I talk with my 93 year old auntie who has helped me through since Home's passing. She even helped me change him the last time before he passed just 2 hours later.
My heart is with you! When my mom was not doing well, I prayed in the middle of the night and gave her to The Lord. At that time they put her oxygen up to 4 liters and called me at 7:35 and said she took a turn for the worse. I drove a almost 10 miles in 5 minutes to the nursing home and she passed before I got there.
May you sense Jesus holding you close to His heart.
