It took about 2 weeks for me. However, I was very diligent in getting the death certificates as soon as they were available. Also, I keep speaking on the phone with them and they were very kind to tell me each time I called, what stage of processing it was in. And then it came, just as promised. Good luck. 4 weeks is an awful long time to wait. Have you given them whatever documentation they need?

It seems to me, I remember 4 to 6 weeks. I had to wait for the death certificate first.

i didnt get my wifes death certificates for about one and a half months .the first insurance i didnt get the whole amount for 6 months ..i am going on a year in april 12 is when cindy died and i am still fighting the other two insurance companies . good luck and i hope it doesnt take you as long .scott

For me my husband's 401K was transferred into my name. in about 5 weeks. It would have been earlier but I was a wreck to send out the paperwork...

Life insurance....you have to call them, ritually...each time I called ours the letter, forms or check was popped off in the mail the day I called. I received the first one with 2 weeks....the second part because it was an accident I had to wait until the toxicology report came in. In my county it took 7 weeks...I just sent the form to request the report...and should receive it by Monday....and will get that off to the Life Insurance company....I estimate that one should take just 2 weeks too...

It took about 10 days for death certificates and another 3 weeks for life insurance. Had it thru a name insurance company and if I had waited for a check it would have taken another month. They have their own bank so I let them set up an account then wrote one check for the amount to put in my bank. 401 rolled over into my name and sits in the bank. Hope you hear something soon. Once I notified the life insurance companies, it took 2 weeks for one and 4 weeks for the other one. I am still waiting for 2 of the 401ks, but I am rolling them over into my IRA account and that took a little more work. My husband also had a pension at an old employer and that is taking forever, first they wanted a death certificate, then a copy of both of our drivers license, then a copy of the marriage license and last week they wanted a copy of my birth certificate?????

As for the medical bills, if they are in his name, write deceased on the envelope and send them back, some may re bill you others will not. If you are re billed, tell them you are waiting for the life insurance money, most places will not pester you again.

Once I gave them the death certificate, it took about 3 weeks. It took a couple of weeks ton get the death certificate as we had to wait for the medical examiner to do the autopsy report. All tolled, it took about a month. Generally, nobody will give you anything or transfer anything unless you have provided the death certificate.

@heartsick1 - That doesn't sound right that they would ask you for every scrap of identity documentation. I don't think that's reasonable. I would send them a letter and put a "cc" on it to my lawyer. You'd be amazed how fast some things move once they think you've got a lawyer involved.

Life insurance that came to me (he also had his parents covered) took about 2 months. There was much more paperwork to fill out on that for some reason.

It took anywhere between 4 weeks and 8 weeks. Jacks company who supposedly loved him when he was alive, couldn't care less after he died. If he treated his customers the way they treated me, he would never have been their top guy for so many years. But that is a tale for another time. I am going to post (under its own title) a partial list of "to dos" that need to be done when a spouse dies. Look for that. I will hope others add to the list so that people like yourself will have a heads up on getting the sad "business" of their death underway. It is a painful process. However, if you receive medical bills, credit card bills, college loans for children that were taken out by him. DO NOT automatically assume they are yours. I thought that in the beginning but quickly found out that most were not. I know you do not have the energy now, but it it important to try to make "business" decisions here. Companies will not offer to clear a bill unless you talk to them. Many will want a "copy" not original of the death certificate. Most times you can fax these. Many companies have special depts (cant remember the name) to deal with the death of a customer. Good luck.
Also, be careful about the 401K, taxes are pretty steep if you try to take the cash. I had Jacks rolled over to me. As much as you do not have the energy to face day to day life, this stuff is a ful time job and will be for a number of months. Best of luck.

I took about 4 weeks for one insurance company and 8 for the insurance from the school district he was retired from mainly because the Human Resource person was in no hurry to give me an appointment or fill out the paperwork. 403B account is still not transferred into my name from Dec 15. It really is stressful until it is all taken care of--hang in there!

It was about 8 weeks for me. You can't do anything until you get the death certificate.

They told me it would take 3-4 weeks and it did. Hopefully you will get it soon.

Thoug the funeral home director told me it would be longer, both of his life insurance companies did a great job of paying quickly once I sent an original of the death certificate. One of the companies was the same one my mother had, and it came quickly for her too. This was of course a great help to me, and we need as much help as we can get those first weeks!
