I never had kids, so I'm in the dark about what is normal or not. My father and I had a heated argument this morning regarding my grandson. I have two grandkids, 9 months and 6 years of age. I live with my father(there only to help him financially and emotionally, not for any other reason) in a two floor house. The downstairs, which is the basement, is finished and has a rug. I've decorated it with nice furniture and made sure that there is nothing lying about that could harm either of my grandkids.
Thing is, my 6 year old grandson likes to run in the basement. I told him this is not allowed upstairs where my father is, but downstairs is okay. He's young, has lots of energy, and I rather is run around then sit and get fat. But my 82 year old father believes children should just sit. No running, no playing, just sitting like an adult.
I've put in a ton of money, remodeling the house. Decorating it. I respect his space, but my grandson is downstairs, not upstairs running about. So what's the verdict on this.
In your expert opinion, is it okay for a child to run in the house? Do most kids run or do they just sit and watch television?
The backyard is not a possibility as my father has moved some items out there that I consider dangerous for kids.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
It also sounds like the basement is your domain..... so you should be able to set the rules.
It sounds like you are doing the right thing by teaching your grandson that while he is allowed to do it in the basement, he cannot do it upstairs. You are so right that kids do need to run and it is much better than sitting and watching television. Since you have made the basement safe and the backyard is not an option, I don't see a problem.
It is very respectful to honor your fathers wishes when they are upstairs with him. There is a lot of communication necessary between the generations to live in the same home....that's for certain.

Ain't gonna happen.
Shoot, I can't even do that :~)
Let him cut loose in the basement - sounds like a compromise to me.
I have 8 grandchildren ages 23 down to 5 years old. I also live in a house with a basement and when the younger grandkids come over they all go down stairs and run amuck as well the should. Kids love to run and as long as it is a safe area that's what kids do.
Hope he will come around and remember how he ran outside and played. Your g=kids have to run somewhere.
