I hope that it all works for you. My mother-in-law who is almost 95 lives in her own place next door to my brother-in-law. It works well for both of them.

Years before my wife passed away, she was responsible for the care of her mother. When her mother's condition declined with age (in her mid-80's), my wife moved her out of a senior residence into an apartment in our building. This solution was much less expensive and allowed her mother to afford the around the clock aides that she eventually needed. It also made things much easier for my wife and me because we could keep an eye on her mother so easily. I think if her mother had wanted something like this earlier on, things would have worked out better all around.

Now that my wife is gone, my kids talk about something similar for me eventually: where I can live as independently as possible, but close enough that we can still be in each other's lives as much as we (mutually!) want.

I do hope this all works out well for you, whichever approach you choose. Change can be dislocating, but it can also bring about good things as well.

I have gone through the down sizing. My daughter's lot was zoned with a cottage plan so her family suggested I build a little cottage there and live next to them. I down sized because I can't maintain 2 acres on my own. I do miss the open space, the garden and going up and down the stairs in a big home. Your heart will lead you to the right decision.

My husband had a series of health issues in the years leading to the terminal diagnosis that took him from us, he survived them gallantly, yet we knew he wasn't "keeping up" with daily routines as easily as before.

We owned a three family house that my daughter and her husband managed. One of the apartments became available for rent and they suggested that we consider selling our home and moving there. The apartment was newly renovated and after much discussion we decided to make the move. It was a very important decision that proved to be more important than we realized, when less than two years later he was diagnosed with lung cancer and died.

His death was unexpected, but I was blessed to have my family close. Now I live here with my new husband after getting to the point of building a new life. I will remain here until my time comes to leave. It's been a blessing to be independent, yet have her close. Sharon
