Andree, I know how you feel! It seems like anything that can break or fall apart has chosen to do so since my husband died - although I think this is simply coincidence, not having someone to share the burdens is so hard. If you need to replace the AC it has to be done, I think that falls into the category of must needed repairs. AC shouldn't be considered frivolous ;-)

I had so many things go wrong right after my husband passed away. My central air went out and I also live in Louisiana. Can't live here without it. Four major appliances broke - I was able to have 2 repaired and replaced 2. Had a water pipe burst twice during a hard freeze in a large workshop - what a mess. Just seems there were a lot of trials in the early days when I was least prepared to handle it. One thing I learned is that we are stronger than we think! Wishing you the best, Sandra

You are right everything seems to happen when we are alone. You can't wait until a year is up to get the AC fixed. I am from Illinois and my furnace went out 4 times last winter. Fortunately our furnace man was a friend of Rodgers and he fixed it for me for what the parts cost him. Diane

I never heard that you shouldn't make major purchases 6 months to a year after a spouse passes away. Two months after Marty passed away I had to buy a new car. He was a gear head and kept our 1988 Olds going and going. The brakes rusted out and it was a neccesity. I think if it is a neccesity then you need to get it. No air the car wouldn't work for me either

I know how you feel. There is no one to bounce your idea(s) off of, or get feedback from. I pretty much second guess myself at times to make sure I am making the right decision. Most times, even though I am doing the right thing, it seems like a gamble to proceed with the decision. However, good luck. It will all work out. A customer of mine had a good saying: "If you not going to worry, then pray, but if you are going to worry, don't bother to pray."

Seems silly, but I find it to be true.

I'm buying a house so I know how scary it is to make big decisions. I keep asking myself if I doing the right thing and buying the right house. I'll get used to this new way of living.

I'm into my journey almost 5 months. So far I have sold a truck, camper, 4wheeler, boat, band equipment, and guns. I've had to put in a new ductwork system for my AC because it was falling apart. I reinsulated to attic to help too. I've had the electric company assess my home for efficiency and I'm waiting on a rebate check from them for all the work I've done.

I've paid off a bulk of my debt and I'm refinancing the house. I know they say don't make major decisions for a year, but I believe that some things HAVE to be done. You need to think carefully before making your decisions, but some things you just can't put off.

I've talked about all these things with my grief counselor and he thinks I'm making sound decisions even though I'm new to all this.

I wish you well in making those tough decisions all alone. It's not easy.

Just speaking for myself - I gave my husband's big truck to my stepson because they needed another car and I didn't want such a big truck. That was one month after husband's death. Then, since I wanted a small truck I went to a small local dealership and bought one and gave my sedan to my stepdaughter who had 3 kids and no car. I did that at about 2 and a half months out. I feel good about that! Plus my stepchildren have the means to bring the grandkids over more! (I 'm not ALL stupid!!) And I love my new little truck!

I want to know who "they " are ? I also was not "advised" not to make major decisions early on. I think if you have a good head on your shoulders and have at least one person to bounce your ideas off of, then go ahead and make those decisions! Afater Mike passed, I too got a new car and gave mine to my son...I wanted a car good on gas mileage. I also paid off all our loans with some of the life ins. money...I don't want to be beholden to the bank for anything! I have been blessed to have the freedom to do that...I don't feel like I jumped into anything, as I have always made relatively good decisions...
So, bottom line... I know I wouldn't want to be living in Louisians without AC!! I don't even want to live in PA without AC!

jillieg - when I said they, I am a legal secretary and I work with (9) attorney's and they tell me through experience it is best not to make large purchases or sell my house. Because they have clients that have come to regret it. But I won't have that problem now because the friend that fixed the unit last year and said the hole couldn't be plugged and we would need a new unit if it happened again is out of buisness now. So I went back to the guy that had put the unit in years ago and he came over found the leak and changed the part no problem. Whereas the other one had said you couldn't get to the part to change it. So thanks for all the advice, so right now I will sit on my money and maybe take a well needed trip as my blood pressure has skyrocketed from everything going on in my life.
