Widows & Widowers Support Group
This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.
I don't think it prepares you for the loss. The only thing I can say it did was to prepare me for how best to live my time that i have left. Cliff and I faced those 4 deaths together, so we said "I love you" everyday and kissed hello and goodbye every time we parted, even if it was for just 15 minutes to go to the store. We had a deeper understanding of my parents' advice to "never go to bed angry with each other" and tried hard never to do that. My husband died like Patricia's - woke me up gasping and died in my arms. My last words to him were me screaming "Don't leave me!"
Prepared? I don't think it's really possible. You know more with each loss, but emotionally? How can it ever prepare you? All the time in the world would not have prepared me to say goodbye.

Amen to that....
Preparation is for dinner parties, etc. Death does not fall under that category. Unless these type of people have walked in your shoes, my best advice would be to "ask them if they have been through what you have?"
I am thankful for the difficult people in my life. They have shown me exactly who I don't want to be.
