I understand. I'm having surgery too. It's not a serious as yours, but I feel so alone. My step-daughter will be taking me and staying for a few hours after. What I didn't tell her was that I'm suppose to have someone with me for 24 hours. She has a husband and two young children to take care of. I just don't want to interfere with her life.

Just remember, God is always there with you. He sends angels to be there for you too, so on the day of surgery ask them to come and stand by your bed and imagine yourself wrapped in the arms of God.

It is friengthening to go through such a thing without your husband by your side, you have every right to feel nervous. Hopefully the hospital will arrange visiting nurses to come check on the drains. Doesn't make up for the one person you really want with you. I am sorry, it's just sad. I cannot tell you all how much your loving responses have encouraged me. We truly are our brother's keeper, so to speak. You all, who don't even know me, have ministered to me in my time of need. I know exactly how you feel. Before my husband died in 2008 I had a colon resection in 2007....emergency!! had all but 5 inches of my colon removed due to diverticulitis and eating popcorn..massive GI bleed. Given 11 units of blood.......anyway...when my husband got sick (CHF and quadruple heart bypass) and on his 3rd visit to the hospital I was helping a nurse put a pillow behind him by pulling on the draw sheet. The minute I pulled the sheet I felt the colon incision tear and said so. My husband, not feeling well at all said " oh yeah, blame it on me:". SO I didn't mention it any more. He already wasn't feeling well and he died in January and in October I had to have hernia repair ....ALONE!!! I too had to wait for my children to coordinate their work schedule to take me to/from the hospital. I did stay overnight and the next day brought home. My daughter stayed with me the 1st night at home but then I told them to go home to their families . I'd need to learn how to do this by myself. I had my husbands walker, which was a life saver for me, to get around. But, I took it slow and easy for a long time. Matter of fact I still take it easy. Even though I remarried and have someone around I'm still afraid of rupturing that same area again. I wish you all the best with your upcoming surgery. Prayers going your way. Surgery is always scary. I will be thinking of you (today). It sounds like your son and daughter-in-law will take good care of you. If prayer or meditation works for you, try concentrating on that. And then they will give you something that will calm you down. It will be difficult but you will get through it.

Just a "funny" story from my own experience. I had three children in rapid succession, and each one was a huge baby. After the youngest was born it became evident that I had a really bad umbilical hernia, so when she was 6 months old I had surgery to get it repaired. Even though my surgeon knew I had three children at home (ages 4, 2, and 6 months), I was sent home from the hospital that afternoon! That evening my (ex) husband announced he was returning to work the next day. I was in agony. I had a babysitter to help me with the baby, but I'm not sure how I made it through. I was most afraid of a rupture, like others said. But somehow it all worked out and I barely remember it now.
