Going through old boxes of stuff in my garage I came across an unopened letter from 15 years ago that I had mailed to myself at work with a note on the bottom to forward to my wife. In those days I traveled a lot on business, flying all over the country and it was on hotel stationary from Chicago. I recall now writing the letter as I had a weird premonition that the flight might go down. I would have been in my mid 40s at the time with two boys around 8 or 9 years old (we were guardians for Jenny till she was 4).
Dearest Diana,
Just in the infinitesimal chance that I dont return from this trip I wanted to pack my bags so to speak. There is nothing in this world greater than my love for you. Of the things that I would change in my life if I lived it over I couldnt image a minute of it without you.
Let the boys know that I love them and I am sorry to leave them but I know they will make me proud. Let Jenny know that I always loved her like a daughter but I know that letting her move back with her mother was the best for her. Tell her she will always be my little sunshine.
When you remarry (you will need a partner and boys will NEED a father influence), make sure that your new partner, as well as being motivated and hard working, knows how to have fun and be spontaneous.

Sometimes we find things like this per chance, so to speak. Somethng I found that still brings me to tears was a card. Hate to admit this, but there were a couple years I actually forgot our anniversary since it is so close to Christmas. My husband never forgot once. He always gave me a beautiful sentimental card, flowers or jewlery. He passed a little more than a week before our anniversary. He had a box of stuff--batteries and whatnot down the basement and there is where I found a card, still yet unsigned.
We are meant to find these things, I guess, though memories are often bittersweet if it is right after our loss. However, it is nice to imagine ourselves back in time when we were once happy together! I hope you didn't throw this precious letter away--stick it in your Bible or in a place for your kids or grandkids to discover someday. It will give them insight to the type of person you were and how much you cared about your family.
