My husband of 23 years lost his battle with colon cancer 3 years ago. The word “husband” seems inadequate. He truly was my best friend. We literally grew up together and I have very few memories that don’t involve him. I know I should be thankful for finding the love of my life so young, and creating 4 beautiful, well-adjusted children. And I am. It’s just that some days it’s hard to thank God for the amazing life we had, because I feel so cheated. Three years later and I still have moments when I forget he’s gone. Every time I work up the enthusiasm to go somewhere or do something new, I remember that he’s not here to share it with me and I lose interest. I know this isn’t the life he’d want for me and it’s that thought and my kids that keeps me going. I do want to be happy again.

Today I feel grateful. Grateful for my dog Blue (Blue Jean Baby Queen, Prettiest girl I've ever seen). Grateful I'm still kickin'. Grateful I'm finally taking responsibility for my health. Grateful I own my home. Grateful for good friends and neighbors who watch over me. Grateful to God for His everlasting love and patience with me. Grateful I survived the 10 years since my wife of 30 years...
