I had a reading around two months after Ric died, which left me feeling a bit annoyed at him. At the time I was clinging to any bit of him I could find, be it notes, pictures anything, so I think I was probably expecting too much from the reading. In th reading he had said he was feeling much better now and was standing tall, and that I had to stop feeling guilty, and if I met somebody else he was ok with that, he wanted me to be happy and not alone. I was expecting the reading to say he was sorry for leaving both me and our son, whom he adored, and that he didn't mean to leave us. So overall it angered me that he is ok, but we are suffering the pain and the loss every single day.

The only denomination I ever heard of that focused on contact with the dead as a main belief in the West is the Brotherhood Spiritualists. The first big round of spiritualists popped up after World War I in Europe. The war deaths were so huge that many, many people were looking for a way of making contact with those they lost in the war. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, was one of those affected - he lost a much loved son in the war and was desperate to make contact. He went from medium to medium, and in the end declared them frauds.
There was a resurgence of psychics/mediums following the 1960's on the West Coast. I'll never forget working in San Francisco in the 1970's and seeing posters everywhere for a 'psychics convention' - all I could think was "Why would they need posters? Shouldn't they already KNOW about it??"
I dealt with some of the local Brotherhood Spiritualists in the SF area in the 90's. They were very sweet, well-meaning people, but they were for the most part out-to-lunch. When you are desperate, you grasp at anything for comfort. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of folks out there who make a living off the bereaved that way.
There was one near my home in Florida. "Madame Dorina" - she had a nice house and every year a brand new Cadillac parked in the yard. Madame Dorina will always be able to weather any recession - she will always have victims. Business is always good for her. It's so sad and so sick....
