It seems like every week a new emotion of this grief journey strikes me. Please, I need someone to talk some sense into me because the thoughts are all over the place So here are the facts. My husband had heart issues for the last 5 years. After his triple bypass three years ago, for two months I made all his meals, drove him around, took him to the doctors and watched his every move. As time went on he resumed to his usual self, seemed much stronger and healthier and by then I no longer escorted him to his doctors visits. It always appeared to me as though he was very on top of going to all his different doctors and that he was not avoiding his needed checkups. On January 8th we lost him to an aortic dissection and I can't help but wonder how this happened. Should I have been more on top of things myself. Could I have done something to stop this. Why did I assume that everything was ok. Must add though, he was at the cardiologist just 2 weeks before and he told him everything looked great and his blood pressure was the best it has been in a long time. I felt good that he was doing well. I just keep beating myself up now wondering if there is something I could have done differently. Did I miss something that would have prompted me to get him to a doctor before this happened. The whole day he seemed fine. We had a really nice day. I just can't deal with this. I am still in deep mourning over his passing and now the "ifs" are making it even worse.

And I wonder, if I see this now, how did all his docs miss it at the time? But, hindsight sees lots of things we might have missed while on the road forward when we are going back over it again and again -- and again and again. It's painful to think that maybe we could have had a little more time, but... nothing to be done now, but perhaps to ask God to forgive whatever I 'clear signs' I might have missed by not being persistent enough or vigilant enough at the time.
My allowing depression and guilt wrack me now over things missed, to compound all the troubles I currently have with chewing myself up over things I simply didn't see or know at time is not going to bring him back to me. Maybe later, I will let that funk sink into me, but I hope not.
