Widows & Widowers Support Group
This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.

Nope. This isn't an eye exam. It's sort of a mental attitude check up for me. I would appreciate your input and thoughts.
I have been widowed for a little more than 8 months. Even though that isn't a huge amount of time I had hoped to feel a little more oriented to this change in life.
I have been seeing a grief counselor, attending a Grief Share group, volunteering a little time each week on a Humanitarian Project one of the churches has going. I make an effort to keep in contact with the friends I had and also the couples that were really good friends of mine and Nick's. I have also read books on grieving and loss. I journal at home instead of on DS but I do journal a few times each week.
For a while I was on the crazy roller coaster ride.. up, down, sideways and upside down. I then started feeling somewhat better.
I expected that there would be a down turn somewhere along the line. What I wasn't prepared for was that what used to bring me comfort no longer seem to.
When I am with my friends I feel so isolated from them. This also effects activities that I used to enjoy. I feel hollow inside. I feel like there is an invisible wall of ice that has surrounded me. I used to enjoy being with friends and also the activities Now I just feel nothing but cold and isolated.
Have you experienced this? If so, were you able to work through it. If you have, please share some insight on what worked. I would really appreciated your help.
Thank you.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
Sometimes you hear some of the things they are worrying about and you think to yourself..."I wished that was the only thing I had to worry about"..Everything just seems to be more trivial as I think we have experienced the worse possible thing in our lifetime, the loss of our spouse.
Some of the activities that we used to do as a couple are still to hard for me to do right now so I will wait until the time comes that I feel comfortable to try again. I have found a few other things that I still do with friends for now.
With my husband gone there is a very big hole so I will have that lonely, empty feeling for a long time yet
One day at a time...
I think it's that same two step dance we are all doing. We move forward, we can laugh, we can talk, we can do for others, and then seemingly out of nowhere.....back to step one, and are so confused becuase we are doing so well. We are doing our day to day, so we are on the right track we think. GREAT! this is getting better! than wham, how did this happen? why am I "here' again? I wish I understood why it happens this way. I know there are triggers, I can deal with them, but when this happens? not sure of much of anything.
the only things that helps me is to get up everyday, tell myself that today, I'm going to do my best to live. To feel, and to love. sometimes i make it, sometimes I fall short. I don't beat myself up anymore for feeling this way. I just tell myself that it WILL pass, and right now I just need to think, if I need to, bry if I need to and BE ALONE if i need that too. the things that brought you comfort so far will again. right now i know for me the things i needed I still do, but I put them aside and come back to them when i can. I go through those motions knowing that at some point, all the feelings i had will come back again. but I have to realize that I am DIFFERENT. And i always will be. the things that worked before are not the same things that work now, because I am SDIFFERENT.
you will enjoy things again. there is nothing wrong, and you will be YOU again. a different you, but YOU just the same. and one day you will really LIKE her. I know that I DO.
wish i had better advice, but that's what it s like for me my friend. We will BOTH get there. A little at a time.

Everything boils down to your own individual needs, personality and newly developed priorities. You will know which approach is the right one for you -- I get the sense that you are a FEELER kind of person and things have to feel right in order for you to enjoy them. Go with your feelings and intuition and you will make the right choice. I've made choices I never thought I would make, but I'm completely trusting my inner voice. I'm not the same person anymore and my priorities are different. We can always rationalize why we need to do something, even if it doesn't feel right. I'm making new friends along the way and I think this the right path for me. What we are going through is by far the worst thing anyone can go through and we have to have faith that we will get to the other side mentally, spiritually and physically stronger than when we started on this journey. Remember you are not separating from life, you are evolving into a new LIFE. Not having small children to raise makes the process more about self discovery. Be patient with yourself, God's love will guide you through this journey. Blessings! Connie
